More than 2 alternating rules joined the chat/game

I call these types of rules "cycling rules", but you can call them whatever you want

B3/S234/B3/S024/B3/S023

Stuff (haven't found any interesting oscillators yet, but have some spaceships)

Preloaf (somewhat fast at c/3)

And a fake glider which, due to the definition of gliding, is still technically a glider

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 11, rule = b3/s234/b3/s024/b3/s023

Gliders rephase themselves into 1 relative phase, and there's a natural p6 thumb:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 4, rule = B3/S23|B34i5n/S23-r
12b3o$3o3b2o3bo3bo$o4b2o4bo3bo$bo5bo3bo3bo!
EDIT:
Natural c/3, also the third most common spaceship:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 4, rule = b3/s234/b3/s024/b3/s023
C.C$2.C$2.C$C.C!

Funky Rule with bunch of weird ships

Code: Select all

B23/S23|B/S23
My Rules:
Hash2F (R3,C2,S4,B5-6,N#)
Growth & Isolation (123/2cn345678/8|236/345678/8)
*unnamed rule* (2-a45678/35aei678/3|4568/2-ce35aei678/3)
*unnamed rule* (/2-e3ae/3)
I'm back after a 3 year break!

Why use a code tag simply to put the rulestring in? At least include some objects.

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 37, rule = B3/S23

This rule is so well-behaved that I want to include it into my rules collection:

Turns out alternating B38/S23 and B3/S23 can create a similar effect to the isotropic non-totalistic rule B34c8/S23 in that TL predecessors can be delayed 1 step in hasslers, but with the added benefit that S8 is never queried, allowing these rephased reactions to work in B38/S23|B3/S238.

Also, this causes some of the hasslers to become larger periods, since B8 isn't triggered for odd-period reactions (Bottom row). How do I calculate the period for oscillators in alterating rules when they do things like this?

Code: Select all

x = 186, y = 164, rule = B38/S23|B3/S23

The p40 oscillator can serve as a periodic 180-degree glider reflector, but I'm not sure how useful it is going to be. The glider timing doesn't seem to allow a two-reflector shuttle:

Two things:

-Has the space of alternating VN rules been explored? I have noted several on the discord with lifelike behavior. What ALTVN rules are able to escape bounding diamond/box and not guaranteed to explode? I’ve narrowed it down to 2^17 from 2^20 (drop b0 and only one alt term must have b1), but surely it can be narrowed more.
-Can any alternating triangular (the THREE cell neighborhood, not the 6 or 9 cell one) display lifelike behavior?

The latter question looks impossible to answer as stated. I don't know what is meant by "lifelike behavior" here, there seems to be no definition or expanation, that appears to be something that would significantly vary from person to person.

Note that by definition, a Life-like cellular automaton is a two-state outer-totalistic cellular automaton with Moore neighbourhood. So alternating CA aren't Life-like CA, and CA defined using von Neumann neighbourhood aren't Life-like CA either.

For the other questions:

Part of the space was explored by considering two-state cellular automata with von Neumann neighbourhood and strobing background. Check the thread on the topic:
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2233&start=50 Gliders and replicators in Neumann neigborhood {4,4} CA

There is a natural way to reinterpret the entire space as a subspace of (non-alternating) three-state outer-totalistic cellular automata with von Neumann neighbourhood. The mapping sends dead cells to cellstate 0, and sends alive cells to cellstate 1+(t mod 2) where t is the current generation number. Out of 9 transitions (which is an upper bound on what is possible for three-state cellular automata), the two transitions (1-to-1) and (2-to-2) are forbidden, and the remaining seven transitions may be possible (depending on what are the rules). The rules are only defined non-arbitrarily for cell conditions involving at most one nonzero cellstate; cellstate 0 is quiescent background. This approach can lead to annoying blinking between two different nonzero cellstates but it's possible to improve that by choosing two colours close to each other.

A slightly better upper bound

(edit: I think that bound should be 2^16 rather than 2^17. One of two alternates must be in the subspace where the rules A0, B1 are followed and there are eight choices to be made for the remaining rules (B2 or A2, B3 or A3, B4 or A4, S0 or D0, S1 or D1, S2 or D2, S3 or D3, S4 or D4). The other alternate must be in the subspace where the rules A0, A1 are followed and again there are eight choices to be made for the remaining rules. That gives 2^(8+8) = 2^16 CA.)

Do you think the following would work for a slightly better upper bound on how many CA can escape the bounding box and aren't guarantied to explode?

Suppose the birth rule B1 (a dead cell with =1 alive neighbour is born in the next generation) is followed in "even-to-odd" ticks (gen 0 -> gen 1, gen 2 -> gen 3 and so on), and the nonbirth rule A1 (a dead cell with =1 alive neighbour remains dead in the next generation) is followed in "odd-to-even" ticks (gen 1 -> gen 2, gen 3 -> gen 4 and so on).

Any growth/movement can only happen due to the birth rule B1, in (at least some of) "even-to-odd" ticks. If the rules followed in "odd-to-even" ticks are such that no alive cell on an edge of the bounding box can possibly survive (i.e. all of the death rules D0, D1, D2, D3 are followed), then any growth/movement will be impossible. So at least one of survival rules S0, S1, S2, S3 must be followed in "odd-to-even" ticks, which means discarding 1 out of (16 = 2^4) possible ways to assign the future state of the middle cell for the four cell conditions S0/D0 (alive cell with =0 alive neighbours), S1/D1 (alive cell with =1 alive neighbour), S2/D2 (alive cell with =2 alive neighbours), S3/D3 (alive cell with =3 alive neighbours). So multiplying the earlier estimate (2^16) by 15/16 should give a slightly better upper bound.

Emulating a two-state cellular automaton with von Neumann neighbourhood and strobing background

This is a restatement of a known approach.
In the outer-totalistic case, suppose the strobing CA has birth conditions b and survival conditions s where b ⊆ {0,1,2,3,4}, s ⊆ {0,1,2,3,4}, 0 ∈ b, 4 ∉ s. Invert all odd generations so that the pattern remains finite, and derive the two rulesets to be alternated:
  • For "even-to-odd" ticks, "evolving for one tick according to Bb/Ss followed by inverting the universe" is equivalent to evolving for one tick according to B{k ∈ {0,1,2,3,4} : k ∉b}/S{k ∈ {0,1,2,3,4} : k ∉s}. (Each of two sets of numeric conditions is complemented within {0,1,2,3,4})
  • For "odd-to-even" ticks, "inverting the universe followed by evolving for one tick according to Bb/Ss" is equivalent to evolving for one tick according to B{4 - k : k ∈ s}/S{4 - k : k ∈ b}. (Exchange the birth conditions and the survival conditions, and replace every numeric condition k with 4-k)
Taking B02/S1V as an example:
  • The given two-state outer-totalistic cellular automaton with von Neumann neighbourhood and strobing background has birth conditions b = {0, 2} and survival conditions s = {1}.
  • For "even-to-odd" ticks, "evolving for one tick according to B02/S1V followed by inverting the universe" is equivalent to evolving for one tick according to B134/S0234V (the birth conditions are complemented within {0,1,2,3,4}, the survival conditions are complemented within {0,1,2,3,4}).
  • For "odd-to-even" ticks, "inverting the universe followed by evolving for one tick according to B02/S1V" is equivalent to evolving for one tick according to B3/S24V (exchange the birth conditions and the survival conditions, and replace every numeric condition k with 4-k).

There are spaceships, but a collision between two spaceships doesn't have to explode:

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 3, rule = B1/S0LE|B2/S0LE
15b2o$b2o14bo$o!
#C [[ GRID THEME MCell ]]
Long-lived soups, there might be some spaceships:

Code: Select all

x = 1, y = 1, rule = B13/S12LE|B23/S23LE
b!
#C [[ GRID THEME MCell RANDOMIZE RANDWIDTH 32 RANDHEIGHT 16 RANDFILL 25 ]]
A similar argument should give an upper limit of 2^12 = 4096 CA where expansion is possible but not guaranteed. (Likely can be significantly improved.) One of two alternates needs to be in the subspace where the rules A0, B1 are followed; the remaining six choices of rules (B2|A2, B3|A3, S0|D0, S1|D1, S2|D2, S3|D3) can be made arbitrarily. The other alternate needs to be in the subspace where the rules A0, A1 are followed; the remaining six choices of rules again can be made arbitrarily.

Re: Alternating rules

Post by ababa11e »

Here's this example soup for a probably explosive rule which has a weird method of expansion where gliders hit these domino-shaped p2 oscillators or themselves, and either duplicate themselves, and make more dominos in the exact way that if left uninterrupted and with a few copies of that collision, it'll keep going for a while. Or they just hit something that causes this weird expansion to die out.

These expansion tend to look like loop-like diamonds.

Here's the example soup.

Code: Select all

x = 71, y = 58, rule = B2ce5aen/S23ry4cen5iny|B23aq4ce5/S12kn34cin5ainqy
