Thread for Discord crossposts

Post by Hdjensofjfnen »

This is a general-purpose thread for humans or bots to crosspost important messages from the Conwaylife Lounge Discord, making them easier to be cited on LifeWiki or read by forum users.

Though this thread is intended to eliminate the barrier of finding the "right" thread to crosspost a Discord message in, please still post discoveries in their appropriate thread in the Patterns forum if applicable.

I was told (offline) that Discord has a proof of "pseudo-oscillators" being minimally-separable into more than 4 pieces (thus unlike pseudo still lives) that works by introducing intersection component (so connection graph is no longer planar)

I don't think it's in News Archive on wiki, nor on any pages (tho that I might have missed)

Not much, it appears! Sorry, I went and looked on Discord when you posted this request, but didn't find any satisfactory answers, so then forgot to post the short string of posts that I did find:

I hate this with a passion
I'm drawing a blank on why LifeViewer is giving an "unsupported rule name" error, since the rule is definitely out there in the LifeWiki Rule namespace ... but given the GIF, maybe that doesn't really need to be sorted out.

The new version of safeopenclip.lua is able to find and load the rule into Golly with one click from the snazzy new HTML pop-up link page, and then the pattern works just as the GIF advertises.

It's because there's an error in the rule definition. The following line ends with a ) rather than a }. That's 15 minutes of my life I'm not getting back...

Code: Select all

var x = {1,2,3,4,5,6)

Wow -- but somehow Golly managed to use that version of the rule without complaining.

I'm tempted to go look at Golly's parsing code and see how it manages that, but that would be a lot more than 15 minutes of my life that I wouldn't get back.

In for a penny...

Golly's parser gets the final token in the line as "6)" and then uses sscanf() with a %u format (unsigned integer) to decode. Fortunately (for Golly) when sscanf() decodes integers it ignores anything after digits so this successfully decodes as 6.

On a not entirely unrelated note I've just fixed the rule on LifeWiki.

Seems like it still doesn't work. Maybe the cause is missing commas in the actual rules? (e.g. "0 1,1,2,3,0,0,0,0 6")
Edit: it worked after doing hard refresh.

Exa — 10/04/2024 11:59 AM
(all results so far boxed, so you can go look in the queue if you want the unfiltered results)

DroneBetter — 10/04/2024 12:00 PM
@Exa how did you find these? surely not manually

Exa — 10/04/2024 12:01 PM
QuSrc (modded version of QuFince that does collisrc-y things at 25M colls/sec, currently not posted anywhere)
(I used to think it ran at 100M colls/sec but it turned out that I was incrementing the generation count by four each time it stepped by one so it was only running them for 50 steps each instead of the intended 200 😅 )

DroneBetter — 10/04/2024 12:02 PM
so do you input the set of things that you want it to synthesise and have it go through in random order?

Exa — 10/04/2024 12:03 PM
it's running an exhaustive search of the set of 5g collisions with glider placements in a 15x15 range, and checking whether any of them produce a still life known to shinjuku with a current cost of 6 or above

DroneBetter — 10/04/2024 12:03 PM
oh, I was under the impression that QuFince was directed rather than brute-force

Exa — 10/04/2024 12:03 PM
nah, one of the neat things is that it's an enumeration, so once you're done with a segment of the search space you're done
you may be thinking of Silk, by the same person and also a GPU-accelerated search program, which is directed.

DroneBetter — 10/04/2024 12:04 PM
is QuFince configurable for arbitrary INT rules and other spaceships in the place of the glider?

Exa — 10/04/2024 12:05 PM
QuFince original is mainly for catforce-y things and doesn't support the collisrc-y broad based "any relevant target" search
also it's cgol only by default

DroneBetter — 10/04/2024 12:07 PM
@apgoucher can you confirm or deny (is it written in lifelib or something bespoke for the particular finite grid sizes?)

Exa — 10/04/2024 12:09 PM
it is, in a very literal sense, written in lifelib
but the step function is very bespoke (also, now that I look at it, I'm actually using an old version locally that wasn't taking advantage of ternaries, I'll need to update)
https://gitlab.com/apgoucher/lifelib/-/ ... heads#L158
correction, it supports CGOL and pedestrian life

Exa — 10/04/2024 12:24 PM
Ooh, nice, 25% speedup from the new step function, up to 32M colls/sec
cgol
Since this is just about exactly the same speedup regular qufince got from this, that suggests that I'm entirely bottlenecked on advance (I still haven't profiled it properly, this is my first time picking it up since just before christmas last year)

Good stuff coming out of that search, phew

Exa — 10/05/2024 3:51 PM
Currently at 3.5 Tcolls out of a search space of 31.4 Tcolls
After I finish this run I'll put up the code - there's more I wanted to do with this before calling it good but I've already spent nine months doing nothing
nine days left if nothing interrupts it - if something does interrupt it I'll need to get around to implementing "resuming partially completed searches" which there's currently no way to do

An improvement of the B29 synthesis recipe to 15 gliders (so far):
Kazyan — 10/9/2024 at 1:17 AM
Improvement to the B29 synthesis, found via QuFince. It replaces the cool mango-fourteener scaffold.

this is 18G, however Catagolue now contains a 16G one, was this your doing also?

Yep, also mine

I'm sure those four green gliders could be three, but I'm far out of practice and don't have synthesize-patt.py up and running

...

Moosey — Today at 9:25 AM
what an elegant synthesis, wow
impressively little scaffolding

dvgrn — 10/9/2024 at 9:27 AM
... I'm almost finished with the Lx65-spine toolkit, so I want to try using the hopefully-improved version of this recipe to build a glider-to-B29 converter -- see how much more compact the new Lx65 tech is in practice.

Not exactly a crosspost, but here is an extracted preceding discussion that started when that collision was discovered.
This is extracted from the old "out.json" archive mentioned earlier ( viewtopic.php?p=192498#p192498 ).
Some interleaving flood of synthesis-related messages was filtered manually.

#578726404200464407 pc101 [Thu May 16 23:32:06 2019 UTC] If in the far future we find 2 period 112 glider rakes we could make this structure as a tagalong for both

#578730376604811274 apgoucher [Thu May 16 23:47:54 2019 UTC] (on each side, so 62 shield bugs in total)

#578730658768224286 apgoucher [Thu May 16 23:49:01 2019 UTC] Again, that's the same.
#578730752464781312 apgoucher [Thu May 16 23:49:23 2019 UTC] I suppose, in theory, you could make one centipede produce all 62 glider streams at the back.

#578731014952583168 apgoucher [Thu May 16 23:50:26 2019 UTC] Orthogonoids are a thing.
#578731537743478815 apgoucher [Thu May 16 23:52:30 2019 UTC] And I think if someone makes an Orthogonoid with a spatial period of 16 (mod 32) and a temporal period of 0 (mod 4), then one Orthogonoid could drag that reaction behind it.
#578731783693139973 apgoucher [Thu May 16 23:53:29 2019 UTC] It would look like an isosceles right-angled triangle, where the Orthogonoid is the hypotenuse.
#578734186802970624 aforampere [Fri May 17 00:03:02 2019 UTC] <@!>, is there a nice way to send extra glider from it?
#578734785787068434 apgoucher [Fri May 17 00:05:25 2019 UTC] We can take Chris Cain's Orthogonoid and tighten it up to have a spatial period of 208 instead of 256:

#578735569866326016 apgoucher [Fri May 17 00:08:32 2019 UTC] Then the left half emits 13 gliders per cycle (SE), the right half emits another 13 gliders (SW), and they interleave perfectly like a zip at the reaction site.
#578736216204247040 aforampere [Fri May 17 00:11:06 2019 UTC] What's your plan?
#578737817035735096 apgoucher [Fri May 17 00:17:28 2019 UTC] I realised in retrospect it wouldn't work as well as I wanted -- to somehow arrange some extra semi-Snarks attached to an output so that the Orthogonoid would produce the extra gliders at uniform intervals throughout the recipe (and then to pad out the recipe to ensure it's 13 * 2^N gliders in length).
#578737858261549058 apgoucher [Fri May 17 00:17:37 2019 UTC] Perhaps it's still somewhat salvageable.
#578738253914701828 aforampere [Fri May 17 00:19:12 2019 UTC] Every way seems really hard or really massive, or both
#578738672611098645 apgoucher [Fri May 17 00:20:51 2019 UTC] It's only slightly larger than a normal Orthogonoid, so I wouldn't say 'really massive'.
#578739068796665873 apgoucher [Fri May 17 00:22:26 2019 UTC] Also, Chris Cain's Orthogonoid won't work because it's restricted to have even glide symmetry.
#578739098735607818 apgoucher [Fri May 17 00:22:33 2019 UTC] We need odd glide symmetry.
