The target you posted has a 1G destruction:

Many small still lives have an one-glider destruction. Those are very easy to find when one exists (just try all possible ways of hitting the target with a glider in Golly). Hence, if you found an 1G destruction of something, most likely there is no reason to post it -- anyone who needs it will be able to find it again.

Very many small still lives have a two-glider destruction where the two gliders arrive one at a time. Those 2G destructions are also too not hard to find in most cases. Try all ways to hit the target with one glider so that there are no escaping spaceships from the collision, and check if the final pattern of the collision has an 1G destruction. So there are not much reasons to post 2G destructions.

Now, if you actually spent some time trying to find an 1G/2G destruction of a small target object, and could not find any, then there are chances that the target is interesting enough to post it.

"I think this has 1G destruction"

Note that for an object of size (n x m) of period p, there are at most (p * (4*(n+4) + 4*(m+4))) collisions of a single Glider with that object. Usually far fewer because of symmetry and objects being "rounded", i.e., not extending to all four rectangle corners.

Since the goal isn't a final census, but to find empty space, that's a task that can be done by hand fairly quickly, or easily automated.

Just set up the Glider at one extreme edge, on the path 2 cells beyond the target bounds, run for a few generations. If it doesn't look like it's dying, move to the next Glider path. Repeat until you are past the other extreme edge by 2 cells. Repeat for all eight (or fewer) orientations. Go to the next period if an oscillator.

If there aren't any, then you can still probably find a smaller/simpler object or constellation where you can repeat the process, and which can be removed by a single Glider.

Which is an interesting question. Are there any objects that require a minimum of three Gliders to completely remove?

I believe every strict still life with 22 or fewer alive cells can be cleanly destroyed with at most two gliders. viewtopic.php?p=168124#p168124

I believe xs19_0g8k48gka53z321 is the unique smallest strict still life that cannot be removed by a p1 slow salvo consisting of two gliders arriving one at a time. viewtopic.php?p=168332#p168332
However, that still life does have a "slow" 2G destruction, with gliders arriving from two different directions:

Code: Select all

x = 45, y = 48, rule = B3/S23
43bo$42bo$42b3o27$3bo$4bo$2b3o10$9b2o$8bobo$3b2o2bobo$2bo2bo2bo$bobo2b
2o$obo$2o!
At some point beyond 22 bits (I don't know when), there should be a strict still life without any "slow" two-glider destruction. No matter how it is hit by one glider, either the collision will release gliders/spaceships escaping to infinity, or else it will be impossible to clean the final pattern by a second glider.

At some point later (I don't know when), there should be a strict still life without any two-glider destruction at all. That is harder to find/verify, because there are many ways how two gliders can hit the target at once.

Please read preceding messages in this thread.
One-glider destructions aren't really noteworthy enough to post them at all.
Glider destructions of small still-life objects can all be considered "known" (enumerated). Most such objects have 1G destructions. More generally, most small low-period objects can be destroyed by one glider or by two gliders arriving one at a time; it is a reasonable expectation to be able to simply try and quickly rediscover any such destruction if and when needed.

Deleting objects

Post by ThePlayzr »

anything that involves deleting objects, such as perturbing, fly-by deletion, puffer stabilization, anything like that.

EDIT by dvgrn: I've merged this new thread with an existing thread with a similar topic.

The problem with posting object deletions one at a time is that we have catalogued (catagolued?) many millions of distinct objects. Every one of them can be deleted. Generally they can be deleted in many different ways. It's generally not difficult to solve any given deletion problem, unless there are specific constraints.

If deletions get posted more or less at random, one object at a time, we could end up with a thread with millions of posts in it, with not much hope of finding any given destruction when it's wanted. It tends to work better when it's possible to build a database of objects, and/or do a compete analysis of some particular category, and post any interesting results from that.

ok how about just the smallest known, kind of like the opposite of a glider synthesis? or just put some of them on the fly-by deletion page? also can you at least change the name of this topic to 'glider destruction and fly-by deletion of still lives, oscillators, etc'?

There's no need to change the name of this topic. Just "glider destruction" by itself already leads to having way too many easy-to-find solutions.

There's also no need to put such destructions on the wiki. Again, there are way too many examples, neither of them is especially interesting compared to all other examples, and it's easy to rediscover them if/when needed.

The simplified rule of thumb is that, if it is easy to find many examples, then please don't post them.

If you found something that looks like it could be of interest to other people in the local community (i.e. isn't just a typical easy-to-find example), then consider posting it in an already-existing forum thread, for example:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=576 "Thread for your unsure discoveries"
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=279 "Thread For Your Accidental Discoveries"
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1141 "Thread For Your Useless Discoveries"
- instead of creating a new thread. In most cases, one should post in an existing thread instead of starting a new one.
