Thanks for the links. Are we allowed to suspect that the Overweight spaceship is an imposter here ? Myaybe we are continuing the sequence wrong ? Is there a fourth member that unlike the Overweight spaceship is actually an spaceship ?

Welcome to our Community Tinker Magus !

The simple answer to your question is a great big NO !

But I know where you are coming from - I am trying to extend the Queen Bee "Family" -

to the next "size", which would be the KIng Bee !

Bigger SpaceShips require support/stabilization, so our XWSS "family" comprises only the three.

But your interest, I am sure, will lead you to some interesting stuff !

Cheers !

I mean, otismo's right about the stabilization part—here are the next three spaceships in the "pattern" (though there can be many different ways to stabilize a really long OWSS):

Code: Select all

x = 39, y = 18, rule = B3/S23

we could say "family" instead of "pattern" -

family-without-support AND family-with-support

but as long as we can understand one another, we are O. K.

NomenClatureWise

LWSS - MWSS - HWSS

AND OWSS - for everything bigger...

Thanks for the welcome. Just read about Queen Bee and its stabilization methods and I was like who figured a block can eat a beehive and how !
What a fascinating project to search for the King. Inform me if you got anywhere. We don't even know how many beehives it will make before replicating itself. That is if it exists after all ! But as you said, even if it doesn't exist we might find some other interesting creatures searching for these missing members of these families.

You might want to post the catalyst / reaction in question. Not everyone who potentially could answer the question is familiar with all the local jargon.

how does Barrister work; mostly asking: how does it find catalysts? i want an in-depth explanation.

What kind of quadratic growth is Max? Would it qualify as MMS (for the moving corners, the moving T-tetromino wave, and the stable zebra stripes), or something else?

Also, is that c/2 T-tetromino wave between the corners anywhere on the wiki? (It's easier to see in the space nonfiller -- I can clarify if needed but I think you know what I'm talking about.)
Can we make a (28,3)c/84 spaceship??

i'm asking about how it finds catalysts, not the parameters. is it just brute-force?

What is the average density of spacedust in a large spacedusty pattern (e.g. spaghetti monster, Sir Robin, any large elementary ship)?

I'm guessing 37.02% (based on mean field approximation).

Also, am I right to say that mean field theory gives a good approximation of the density of a spacedusty pattern in OCA?

What is your definition of 'spacedusty'?

I tried to answer your question. I was originally thinking of something relating to the envelope, but ships don't really have an 'envelope' per se, so I oscillatorified the ship (using your very helpful shipvol script) and got this:

Code: Select all

x = 343, y = 308, rule = R10,C2,S5-7,B5-7,NW000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000200000020000002000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000200000010000002000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000200000020000002000

I got a (avgpop)/(cells in envelope) of 12194/31038 ≈ 39.287%, which is quite close to the mean field density. Which brings me to another question: is my proposed measure a good measure for the density of an oscillator/ship?

The simple answer to your question is a great big NO !

But I know where you are coming from - I am trying to extend the Queen Bee "Family" -

to the next "size", which would be the KIng Bee !

Bigger SpaceShips require support/stabilization, so our XWSS "family" comprises only the three.

But your interest, I am sure, will lead you to some interesting stuff !

Cheers !

The Pattern above is a row of three Patterns, two Pi-injector FireClouds

and a Gosper Glider Gun. Left-hand FC morphs into a KB which morphs into a Pulsar.

Right-hand FC ( center Pattern ) morphs into a King Bee and a Block;

the King Bee progresses thru its phases, emitting its Blinker and then disappearing.

Mainly the discussion is on page eleven of the otismo thread.

CGoL is most fascinating when you make all the discoveries yourself - even "Gosper's Glider Gun" !

CGoL can get way too trivial way too fast - when you conceptualise in your head and make no patterns to share...

As an example, the rulestring from the post quoted below is this:

Code: Select all

R2,C0,S34-67,102-135,170-203,255-271,B51-67,119-135,187-203,224,229,255-271,292,294,NW01010101010111551101015500550101115511010101010101
The neighbourhood is this:

Code: Select all

NW01010101010111551101015500550101115511010101010101

01 01 01 01 01
01 11 55 11 01
01 55 00 55 01
01 11 55 11 01
01 01 01 01 01
Note that weights are in hexadecimal (so "55" means 5x16+5 = 85, "11" means 1x16+1=17 etc.)

To evaluate the current condition of the central cell, calculate the sum of weights of all alive cells in the neighbourhood. For example:
  • If the central cell is alive and has 7 alive neighbours, including two orthogonally adjacent, one diagonally adjacent and four "outer" neighbours, then the current condition of the central cell is S(2 x 85 + 1 x 17 + 4 x 1) = S191.
  • If the central cell is dead and has 6 alive neighbours, including one orthogonally adjacent, zero diagonally adjacent and five "outer" neighbours, then the current condition of the central cell is B(1 x 85 + 0 x 17 + 5 x 1) = B90.
The central cell lives in the next generation if and only if its current condition belongs to the set of living conditions defined in the rulestring.
In this example, the living conditions are defined as follows; in particular, S191 belongs in the set, but B90 doesn't belong.

Code: Select all

S34-67,102-135,170-203,255-271
B51-67,119-135,187-203,224,229,255-271,292,294

When using x on y for LCM, which oscillator should be X or Y? For example, should it be tumbler on Rich p16 or the other way round?

What is "Gosper glider gun supported by ouroborous bees", please.

Thank You !

EDIT :

this is from LifeWiki, Maximum Volatility Gun :

The maximum volatility gun is a single-barrelled period-177 glider gun found by Jason Summers on October 22, 2009,[1] using many copies of Karel's p177 to generate gliders via pairs of passing spaceships in an out of the blue reaction. Most of the gliders are then reflected back to rebuild the spaceship stream.

This is one of only a few known guns in Conway's Game of Life with volatility 1, i.e. guns in which every single cell oscillates. Other smaller examples include the period-45 glider gun supported by pentadecathlons, period-88 glider gun supported by figure eights, The former smallest p46 glider gun supported by a statorless stabilisation used in 50P92.1 and even Gosper glider gun supported by ouroborous bees.

This is one of only a three known gun periods in Conway's Game of Life with strict volatility 1, i.e. guns in which every single cell oscillates at the same period. The other two examples are Gosper glider gun supported by ouroborous bees and period-86 gliderless MWSS gun using the H-to-MWSS supported by a pair of strictly volatile p86s.

EDIT TWO :

and here they are, The Ouroborous Bees :

Presumably, it's a Gosper glider gun, but where you'd normally have a block at each end, you have a instance of Ouroboros bees instead.

Wow -- this was something that got discussed on the first page of this Basic Questions thread. But I can't seem to find any prior art, in terms of an actual pattern with ouroboros bees cleaning up beehives.

They must be out there somewhere, but they're not turning up for me. It's easy to re-create a sample, though:

Code: Select all

x = 76, y = 37, rule = B3/S23
63b2o$63b2o$58b2o6b2o$57bo2bo5b3o$58b2o6b2o$63b2o7bo$63b2o6bobo$55bo15b

bobo2bo2bo2bo13bobo11b2o6b2o$2b3o14bobo2b2o6bo14bo11b3o5bo2bo$bo3bo14b
o8bobo28b2o6b2o$29b2o32b2o$2o3b2o56b2o3$17b2o3b2o2$3bo14bo3bo$2bobo14b
3o$2bobo5bo8b3o$3bo4bobo$6b2o8b2o$6b2o7bo2bo$6b2o8b2o$8bobo$10bo!
There are probably a lot more ways to do equivalent tricks. Obviously the bounding box would be smaller if the left ouroboros-bees got mirrored vertically, but bounding box isn't really a criterion here.
