What is that all about?
Help is greatly appreciated.
Try starting with the LifeWiki articles about rules -- e.g.,

Life-like rule

Isotropic non-totalistic rule

Larger than Life

-- and maybe also the Golly Help file about the types of rule formats that Golly can read.

The words or phrases that you mentioned are usually going to be either aliases for specific Life-like or isotropic or Larger-than-Life rules, or they'll be custom-defined "RuleLoader" rules. Sometimes RuleLoader rules use different neighborhoods than the usual eight neighbors, and/or they'll often use more than just two cell states.

You can look up a rule on the LifeWiki in the OCA namespace -- e.g., OCA:Amoeba -- or find the actual rule definition for a RuleLoader rule by looking in the Rule namespace -- e.g., Rule:ZombifiedLife.

(It may not be appropriate, but I don't think there're other places that I can post it)

In theory RCT can construct anything, including itself (may displace), so spaceships based on RCT is possible. But is there any explicit construction? If yes, please provide a MacroCell file.

No, there is no explicit construction for a spaceship or oscillator or sawtooth RCT. All of these are doable, but they would need a little bit more work than the currently completed examples -- because they require building seeds for gliders at the faraway corners of an RCT pattern, and then probably coordinating the activation of those seeds from the epicentre.

It's not a lot of work, compared to all the other explicitly solved parts of current RCT paterns, but it's work that hasn't been done yet.

A macrocell file of any of these would be on the same order of size as the macrocell file Pavgran generated for the full RCT16 pattern -- somewhere around 30 megabytes, so big enough to be a little awkward, but not impossible to work with.

To make it available to everyone interested, regardless of having access to Discord, below is what seems to be the relevant part of the conversation, extracted from the converted archive of messages.

Warning: Golly 4.2 crashed when I attempted to open the linked 30-megabyte mc.gz file.

Interesting -- that matches what I thought I was seeing, but I don't have anything but rather vague theories as to why that would be. Is that mostly in the initial stages -- say, when the viewer is repeatedly zooming in and slowing down to get to the initial collisions between glider streams at the epicentre?

I believe it should work correctly, although I couldn't test it, obviously. I had to fiddle with my previous direct MC builder for RCT to make glider positions coincide with the semilator script for a few test patterns.

The same thing happened to me on my new laptop. I tried bumping up the memory usage in Golly from 6MB to 20MB, but not surprisingly that didn't make any difference -- Golly still crashed and exited.

I also tried bumping up Golly's stack size, as Tom Rokicki described and dani tried out here:

Code: Select all

editbin /stack:8000000 Golly.exe
I do seem to remember getting some "full" RCT pattern to run for a while in Golly, but I suspect that was the shillelagh demo pattern -- much much much smaller in size.

I don't remember offhand whether there are any changes waiting around in the upcoming Golly 4.3 beta, that might make a difference to Golly's initial behavior. However, something calcyman said at one point on Discord may be relevant here:
On 11/10/2022, calcyman wrote: I don't fully understand why people are trying to run this in Golly -- it's absolutely impossible to run it to completion given that the peak memory usage would be many terabytes, and probably larger than Linux's 46-bit userspace virtual address space.

Haycat2009 wrote: January 29th, 2024, 10:20 pm How can just 15 gliders crash Golly? And what about Lifeviewer?
It's fifteen gliders, but they're placed far enough apart from each other that the distance between them is bigger than the number of atoms in the visible universe.

That's not even a half-decent comparison -- there are "only" 10^80-ish atoms in the visible universe.

We need a point of comparison for a distance that's somewhere up in the 10^500000 range, and it's hard to find one.

It's very hard for Golly to do simulations of distances like that without running out of stack space. HashLife wasn't designed to work with anywhere near that many levels of hashtiles.

LifeViewer's algorithm, as currently implemented, works up to a 16,384x16,384 grid if I remember right, so it is considerably less relevant to a full RCT pattern than Golly's HashLife is.

Could a life "algorithm" be made that can run RCTs effectively? Perhaps it would have some way to represent a glider-producing switch engine in an extremely tiny amount of information relative to their size - and might keep track of glider movement by tracking just the front cell. And maybe it could be optimized for the actual caber tossing part of the gliders bouncing back and forth to construct the middle... maybe it would be able to emulate the ECCA/DBCA too? And it would fall back to Hashlife or something equivalent when other interactions start happening.

There's surely a flaw in this idea - where does it lie?

Nope, there's no flaw. We could even do a trick like that very nicely with an only moderately complicated Lua script, making use of the Lua overlay inside Golly.

That is to say, we could write something that directly reads and interprets a 150MB+ macrocell file representing a full RCT pattern -- or, much better, an RLE or Life 1.06 version, which would be much smaller:
On Discord, calcyman wrote:Compressed Life 1.06 would be very small -- it should be close to 200 kilobytes if done properly:
https://conwaylife.com/wiki/Life_1.06
Effectively all of the 160 coordinates will be the same large number, except with a possible leading minus sign and some differences in the last few digits. The rest of the digits will be identical, therefore easy to deduplicate.
We can predict where all the various pieces of an RCT pattern will be, at any time during its evolution. So, for example, we could run the construction and deconstruction of the DBCA and ECCA and ATBC so on, and take in-memory snapshots every so often. Then, any time the viewport is zoomed in on a region such that the DBCA or ECCA or ATBC or whatever takes up more than one pixel, we can use those in-memory snapshots to figure out exactly what it would look like, and quickly display that.

For the debris trails left by the various GPSE's, it's a similar story: we can easily reconstruct what would be in any given viewpoint location, at any given time in an RCT's evolution. There's not really any point in keeping track of a gazillion copies of mostly identical ash -- it's all super predictable... if it wasn't, the RCT mechanism wouldn't work in the first place.

Now, if you want this RCT simulation to be absolutely accurate, there are some annoying details to sort out, having to do with excess gliders getting harmlessly absorbed here and there along the NW and SE GPSE ash trails, making very slight changes to those ash trails at ridiculously wide intervals. But even that is perfectly possible to track accurately, though maybe it's hard to justify in terms of the benefit you get from the extra code complexity.

Questions about pattern which fit any thread

Post by Tawal »

I think this kind of thread can be useful to the forum.
Especially for the newcomers, beginners ...
Also useful to avoid to polluting the forum and the threads with one question, one answer.
This thread's title is open to suggestions.

There's many questions I hadn't posted for the reasons above.
So let's go :)

My 1rst question :
About synchronisation of Gliders with Snarks, when I need a decay of 1hd how can I do ?
Is there a reflector which has this output lane relatively to the input :

This looks like a good question for the Basic Questions thread, so I've moved it here.

Yes, many such reflectors exist -- just nothing as small or fast as a Snark. "Decay" is usually used for something else; for an offset of 1hd, the standard terms go like this:

the Snark is a colour-preserving reflector, and

this recently-discovered G-to-G is a colour-changing reflector.

Technically a combination of a Bandersnatch and a Snark is slightly smaller than the above G-to-G. There are other recently-discovered color-changing reflectors with a repeat time faster than the Bandersnatch, if that happens to be more important than the size.

Yet I've searched 3 to 4 pages = 75 to 100 threads !
Yesterday a message was posted in this thread and it doesn't up for me.

I wonder how exactly such a feature could be implemented. How to distinguish those cases when two objects are essentially the same spaceship, from those cases when two objects are different mechanisms?
  • Some rules have many relatively "boring" variations of the same spaceship, which get different apgcodes. So simply counting apgcodes beginning with "xq" probably would not be satisfactory.
  • Some rules have commonly occurring adjustable spaceships, which have different periods (differing prefixes of the apgcode) but are still variations of the same object. At the same time, there are cases when different unrelated mechanisms have the same period. So looking just at the apgcode prefix would not be satisfactory either.

I already had an incomplete set of apgcode/rulestring pairs (collected from an earlier exploration during several month, unfortunately too large to attach here). I just filtered it to keep spaceships only and reformatted in the form "one rulestring per line, list unique periods instead of apgcodes" using a Python script. The result was small enough to attach.

Since D8_2 is technically not a symmetry but is sometimes preserved, what rules preserve C4_2 and D4_2 symmetries?

1. Is it possible for anything to gain temporary D8_2 symmetry, before reverting?

Sweet! Are there any oscillators that toggle back and forth between D8_2 symmetry and D4_2 symmetry?
Haycat2009 wrote: August 23rd, 2023, 6:37 am Since there is a D8_2 symmetry, a C4_2 and D4_x2 symmetry exists too, right? And also, what isotropic transitions must either all exist simultaneously or none should to preserve C4_2 or D4_x2 symmetry?
Haycat2009 wrote: August 28th, 2023, 6:41 am Since a D8_2 symmetry exists, does C4_2 and D4_x2 symmetry exist? And what birth and survival conditions need to be the same to preserve such symmetries?

Do conduits that use the FNG for cleanup count as dependent?

If you mean something like HLx86H / Lx86, then no. Such conduits use the first natural glider of the output Herschel for cleanup. However, the FNG of the input Herschel escapes.

Code: Select all

x = 35, y = 42, rule = LifeHistory

If you mean something like a Rx113 / HRx113H, then no. The input Herschel still produces the first natural glider, therefore the conduit is independent. It's just that the FNG of the input Herschel is necessary for the conduit to work in a repeatable way.
confocaloid wrote: February 17th, 2023, 1:03 pm Did anyone already notice that there are now at least two completely different Rx113 conduits? I think one of these two Rx113 conduits is CC and one is CP. Here are both of them in a 760-tick loop, with four Fx77 in between:

By definition, dependent conduits are those where the input Herschel interacts with catalysts in the first few ticks, and is prevented from emitting its first natural glider.

There's one three-glider collision that produces a glider-producing switch engine, by simsim314. It was once kinda mislabeled as a BLSE, but don't be fooled... Oddly enough, even though BLSEs are more common than GPSEs, I don't recall that any BLSE-producing 3G collisions have turned up yet.

There might still be one out there in the space not enumerated by 2718281828's 3G collision collection.
