Why hasn't anyone tried a Sprayer heisenburp, despite its strong spark? Here is a not so good way of extracting a B from it:

A little more information would be good. Why did you post these particular two quasi still lifes? Please don't post any more of them in the Still Life Synthesis thread; the above post was reported, with a suggestion to move to the Sandbox. But maybe it's useful to move this example here to Basic Questions, since the post asks an implied question that is easy to answer:

What is a good way to find syntheses for these kinds of quasi still lifes?
(presumably by locating suitably edgy components that add blocks and tubs to other objects)

One good way of finding these is to ask Mark Niemiec's database. Another possible method is to ask slsparse if it has recipes that can place those objects.

Definitely try the database search first. In this case you go look at the block and tub pages at all the collected syntheses that have been found to be useful, and pick out the cheapest edgiest ones.

In this case, there's a 2G block recipe and a 3G tub recipe that are plenty edgy enough, so these constructions don't even cost anything extra.

There probably should be one big labeled stamp collection. The collection thread just has stuff scattered through the thread.

Most of the common objects (beehive, boat, block, etc.) have most of their known factories gathered together into one post apiece, though.

It can be made into an R-to-beehive factory that can stop a glider (in the same way as G-to-pi catalyst (August 2023)) was made into a glider-to-hive).

I'd call that elementary, yes.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a useful elementary conduit, though -- there are less than ten ticks available for some hypothetical next conduit to grab hold of that pi and keep it from destroying the block. Are any known pi-to-X conduits useful here?

Blocks on both sides of the input R like that are still pretty much a death sentence for an R-to-X conduit. HLx111R is one of the stars of the show as far as edgy R outputs are concerned -- and unfortunately it's still one cell away from getting an R past that top block. Try fitting these two halves together:

Code: Select all

x = 69, y = 54, rule = LifeHistory

Now, as usual, I'm working from a maybe-not-completely-updated elementary conduits collection. Have I forgotten some new discovery that produces an R that's even more edgy than HLx111R?

This is a disadvantage of those big labelled stamp collections which are supposed to reflect state-of-the-art (as opposed to e.g. results of a complete enumeration like two-glider collisions). They quickly become outdated, and they are slow to update.

In this case, I myself tried several candidates (including HLx111R and Herschel transceiver) without success.

There are one-glider seeds that can put the R in that place, so one could engineer an artificial conduit contraption, but I think that kind of nonsense is unlikely to be useful here:

Single-channel recipes are not slow, and explored slow salvos use more than one lane.
How much exploration has been done on single-lane slow salvos?
In particular, how large a "reasonable" construction elbow could be in bounding box? Is it possible to definitely rule out a single-blinker construction elbow? An elbow that is 50x50 or smaller?

That's a very good question. I kind of suspect that a single-blinker construction elbow could be definitively ruled out pretty quickly, with an exhaustive search.

For a larger and more complicated elbow, there are a lot of options to check. I'm not sure that it's possible to definitively rule out a two-blinker construction elbow, or a blinker-and-block construction elbow, even inside a smaller bounding box like 10x10.

For some placements of two common objects, the search tree might well expand far enough that no exhaustive search is possible -- and yet getting a specific placement of two objects back again is highly unlikely, so actually finding relatively prime INCm and DECn recipes and a FIRE recipe ... is probably going to take a very long time and cost a lot of gliders, if such recipes even exist at all.

Does the H-R in R152 count? It is one of very few conduits that can feed into a RF48H. (Even HRx111R cannot pull that off.)

Also what is the difference between afind, bfind, cfind, dfind, efind, ffind, gfind, hfind, ifind, jfind, kfind, lfind, mfind, nfind, ofind, pfind, qfind, rfind, sfind, tfind, ufind, vfind, wfind, xfind, yfind and zfind? I cannot find guides on which one to use, and why are there so many one-letter finds?

And as a sanity check, are p30, p86 and p177 the only periods with strictly volatile guns?

I haven't absolutely confirmed it, but I strongly suspect that they do.

The only configuration that seemed likely to be missing was the 3x3 all-ON square, since that's relatively rare. But it shows up at T=40 in the two-glider mess pattern from Golly's two-glider-collisions.rle:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 12, rule = LifeHistory
9.A$8.A$8.3A$3D$3D$3D4$6.A$5.2A$5.A.A!
#C [[ PAUSE 2 AUTOSTART STOP 40 ]]
Actually it's around T=35 in the pi-heptomino collisions, too, come to think of it -- not really rare at all:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 6, rule = LifeHistory
11.A$10.A$3D7.3A$3D11.3A$3D11.A$15.A!
I haven't dug up the center-cell-on-plus-four-diagonal-neighbors configuration yet -- the '4c' neighborhood. Hang on a minute, there's a script that can be run to figure this out...

I believe the two-glider mess collision is isotropically endemic to B3/S23. Absence of the condition S4c is tested when going from T = 134 to the next generation. Absence of S6i is tested in the tick from T = 144 to T = 145. All other Hensel conditions are tested earlier.

Is there a collection of eater 1 factories?

Code: Select all

#C I am inactive currently.

If only there were enough of them to collect.

There was a "transparent eater 1" example (not a factory) crossposted on LifeWiki talk:Did you know/162:

Code: Select all

#C incomplete octomino-to-H conduit including a transparent eater 1
#C https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?oldid=135666
x = 18, y = 33, rule = B3/S23

AlbertArmStain posted a partial (which I "completed" in a likely-useless way):

I believe some examples of this were posted in discussion Talk:Honey farm hasslers (an incomplete p26 pre-pulsar hassling wick; a p25 pre-pulsar hassler).
