Here is another possibility. Construct a loafer, wait, construct a LWSS:

Code: Select all

If I understand correctly, you could create a block, then push the block as far as needed, and then convert the block into a sideways glider. (The repeat time would not be too good, but the lane of the output glider could be as far as desired from the part of the device that is there in the passive state.)
But can you adjust the clearance without changing the population of the entire converter? You would need some way of specifying how many push operations you need to adjust clearance. One possibility is building a Herschel track which ends with a Herschel loop gun producing streams of gliders that can push a block. Extra gliders with adjustable timing can be used to destroy the Herschel in the loop and activate other circuitry which sends a stream of gliders towards the block that converts it into a sideways glider.

I might be missing some key criterion, like the bounding box having to stay reasonable also. But it seems like there's no problem keeping the population the same for an arbitrarily high-clearance glider edge-shooter, with a fairly decent repeat time for any clearance. E.g., wire up something from the glider pair adjustment toolkit that produces the two white gliders here:

in LifeWiki, under SpeedTunnel,

the Block is referred to as "Transparent"

the Loaf is referred to as "Bait"

what is the difference between

Bait and Transparent, please

Thank You !

In my understanding, a transparent catalyst is just any still life that is destroyed by a passing reaction, and then restored back again. The block in Conduit 1, the transparent mango in a recently found sparky variant of SW-2T21, the transparent longboat in NW-2T16.

A bait is a transparent catalyst with a particular purpose: specifically, to detect arrival of a glider or another spaceship. For example, objects used for detection in Heisenburps are baits. The block in Snark is a bait.

Yup, this all seems right. There's maybe a little bit of subtlety about bait objects. The longer it takes for an object to be restored after it's been destroyed, the more likely it is to be called a "bait object". In particular, if an object is completely used up to assist in the production of clean output signals, and then one or more of those output signals are routed around to rebuild the object ... then that's definitely a bait object, and it wouldn't ordinarily be called a "transparent object" even though it is in fact transparent.

Conversely, in the speed tunnel, the loaf, the beehive, and the block all get restored by the action of the catalysts immediately surrounding them -- and they're all transparent. I don't think anybody would raise an eyebrow if they all three got called "transparent objects", but it would be a little odd to call them all "bait objects", though the definition could maybe be stretched to allow it.

I'm kind of suspecting that the loaf was the only object in the speed tunnel article that got called a "bait", just because the loaf got completely used up to produce a standard conduit output (a clean pi-heptomino). Then the following catalysts acted on the pi heptomino to restore the loaf and produce a Herschel output. So the loaf restoration is not exactly the usual "routing a signal around to trigger a factory to rebuild the bait", but it's somewhere on the right continuum, anyway!

Like the block in the Snark, the loaf in the speed tunnel is at the end of the continuum where it's perfectly okay to call it either a "bait" or a "transparent object".

EDIT 2/29/2024: Looking back at the etymology of the term "bait" again, I'm finding that there are no relevant uses of the term before 2004 in the LifeCA email archives. Here's the message where I introduced the term -- "grabber" and "shover" obviously never caught on, but "bait" and "highway robber" did:
On 21 March 2004 3:59pm, dvgrn wrote:Subject: Grabbers, shovers, and highway robbers

Recently I've been trying to put together a special-purpose glider reflector that can reflect a glider on a given glider lane, but let gliders on neighboring lanes get past -- in the minimal case, the separation between lanes might be just a single cell (orthogonally, not diagonally).

The only way I know how to do this is to set up a grazing shot with some small still life, and then duplicate the resulting signal and set up an appropriate collision to rebuild the still life. Not too difficult, but there are so many possible designs that it's hard to figure out which way is best.

So I looked for a "bait" still life that could be dangled at the edge of the glider lane, and which would produce a tameable signal after a grazing shot. It also needed to be rebuildable with a minimum number of synchronized signals.

In the process, I ran into an interesting catalysis by a boat -- anyone know if it's been seen before?

Code: Select all

.o.......
.........
.........
.........
......oo.
.....o..o
.....o.o.
......o..
.........
.........
.........
.....ooo.
.....o...

There was also a nice glider-plus-boat -> two-gliders converter, though it wasn't quite what I wanted in this case. Probably already known, or generally useless, or both...

Code: Select all

.oo.......
o.o.......
.o........
..........
..........
......oo..
ooo...o...
o......ooo
.o.......o
This beehive -> LOM conversion might possibly be useful, but I haven't figured out how to reduce the amount of junk it leaves behind:

Code: Select all

.o....................
o.o...................
o.o...............oo..
.o................o...
...................ooo
..............oo.....o
..............oo......
ooo...................
o.....................
.o....................
Paul Chapman's Glue project has turned up a few patterns that are extremely good at this kind of sneaky glider-highway robbery [to mix my fishing and criminal metaphors unforgivably.]

For example, this pattern grabs a glider from the edge of the highway without disturbing a second glider following at the minimum distance:

Code: Select all

.oo....
o.o....
.o.....
.......
.o.....
o.o....
o.o....
.o.....
.......
.......
.......
ooo....
o......
.o.....
....oo.
....o.o
....o..
This one works with a following distance of 16:

Code: Select all

.oo.....
o..o....
.oo...o.
.....o.o
......o.
........
........
.ooo....
.o......
..o.....
........
.....ooo
.....o..
......o.
But these are both relatively expensive to reconstruct, I think.

This simple two-beehive constellation throws a glider in the other direction -- it's a "shover" instead of a "grabber". Having the glider cross the highway ruins the following-distance rating, of course, but I didn't really need it anyway:

Code: Select all

.oo.............
o..o....oo...ooo
.oo....o..o..o..
........oo....o.
If that's not enough, this one throws _two_ gliders across the highway, and is even easier to rebuild:

Code: Select all

.oo...ooo
o..o..o..
.oo....o.
.........
.........
.........
.........
.........
.........
.........
....oo...
....oo...
All of these constellations take nine or ten slow gliders to rebuild, starting from a single block. And since there's no single block left over after the glider-turning reactions, the Glue recipe doesn't seem like an efficient way to rebuild the bait.

Also the slow gliders would all come in along the highway, in the same direction as the input glider -- so most of them would have to be put in with glider inserters of one kind or another.

------------------------------

After some experimentation I settled on this reaction for Round One:

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 59, rule = B3/S23
28bo$28bobo$28boo7$12bo$10boo$11boo$3bo$b3o$o$oo18$12bo$11boo$11bobo
21$27boo$27bobo$27bo!
Loaves take three gliders to rebuild, but only one glider to make from a blinker -- and a blinker can be made with two gliders in a couple of ways. So at least all three don't have to be simultaneously synchronized.

Because I've been working on a lot of slow-salvo-constructible Herschel circuitry in the last few months, my first-draft sample uses only well-separated small still lifes. Here's the first thing I could get Hersrch to give me -- it's just blocks and eaters, in fact, plus five beehives, a boat, a tub, and a loaf.

It looks positively primeval, since all the pieces are several years old -- most of them are borrowed from Paul Callahan's constructions, from back before Herschel conduits with eater2's and custom eaters had come into common use:

Code: Select all

#C Highway robber: snags a glider travelling at the edge of a
#C 'glider highway' and reflects it or produces an output Herschel;
#C no effect on (most) other gliders travelling in the highway.

Obviously this is nowhere near optimal -- it takes over 3000 generations to recover. Basically I just wanted to get something working without getting bitten too badly by the combinatorial dragons that lurk in these parts. As usual, the Herschel-circuit connections are thanks to Hersrch.

Somebody must have an idea for at least a factor-of-two improvement on this...

Keep the cheer,

Here's another use of the term "bait" from 2007:
On 8 Jan 2007 7:13 am, dvgrn wrote: Subject: Re: Re: P1 unit cell -- Stable Pixel Fill

I had another look at converting LWSSs to other types of signals yesterday and came up with a few new things. Some experiments with an alternate Herschel-to-beehive converter failed to improve on the recovery time for an LWSS-to-glider circuit (the current record is 744 ticks, I believe) but did produce a nice fast LWSS-to-Herschel circuit that passed at least my own personal quality test. It recovers in under 1000 ticks, which is not too bad considering there's a clean Herschel output; the serendipitous tandem glider basically delivers an extra Herschel for free to rebuild the beehive bait.

Code: Select all

#C stable LWSS-to-Herschel converter -- produces a Herschel
#C descendant that can feed an F116 (shown) or R64 conduit.
#C Recovery time is 978 generations, but the output
#C Herschel is available soon after the initial collision.
#C There's a clear path through the circuit if the beehive is
#C not present, so it could also be used as a demultiplexer.

I think the loaf in the speed tunnel is a bait simply because it is hit and destroyed by the incoming glider, and restored later to prepare for the next glider. The beehive and the block do not interact with the glider so they are not baits.

What is the expected method / constraints? E.g. one could destroy the settled honeyfarm and construct a block in empty space by colliding gliders. Or one could use a slow salvo aimed at the settled honeyfarm to transform it into a block in the desired location.

I think I asked something like this before, and it would be a good idea to collect all active regions-to-blocks as we can discover more transparent reactions that way. Indeed, some conduits with a transparent block I made rely on this idea:
qqd wrote: October 31st, 2023, 11:24 am Is there any way to place a block in the following location from a pi?

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 4, rule = LifeHistory

Relatedly, is it a good idea to keep a census of all Pi-to-blocks? I noticed that a lot of block collisions produce a pi near their location. This could allow us to find more transparent blocks, in fact, this is how I found this transparent block:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 29, rule = B3/S23

C28 wrote: November 29th, 2023, 7:50 pm what is the difference between "condition" and "transition" when talking about CA rules?
Transitions are events that can happen, when certain conditions are met.
An example of a transition would be "an alive cell survives".
An example of a condition would be that an alive cell survives when it has 2 alive neighbours.

I think yes, a condition is what "has to be true" for a cell to do something, and a transition is that event that can happen with a cell.
It is more like "conditions and transitions are two different kinds of things", rather than "one is a subset of another".

There is a minor caveat.
One could write something like "HighLife differs from Life in the B6 condition" or "Adding the B6 condition to Life gives HighLife". If you read this literally, then the condition is "B6" (i.e. "a cell is born when it has 6 alive neighbours") in this example.
Alternatively, one could write something like "6 alive neighbours is neither a birth condition nor a survival condition" when talking about Life (because the rule definition B3/S23 has neither B6 nor S6). If you read this literally, then the condition is just "6 alive neighbours" in this example.
In both cases, it is stated "what has to be true for a cell to do something".

There is a separate forum thread intended to cover this question:
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6235 "Rule definition terminology"
Here's another caveat, though. The first post in that thread gives an inaccurate impression about current common usage of 'transition' and 'condition'.

The two terms are very commonly used as near-synonyms of each other, both here on the forums and in LifeWiki articles. Both terms are commonly used with the meaning that confocaloid gives for the term "condition" -- to the point where most of the time when you see the word 'transition' around here, it will have the same intended meaning as confocaloid's 'condition'.

Yes, and in fact I wrote in the first post in that thread --
confocaloid wrote: November 20th, 2023, 2:18 pmIn jargon/in informal discussions, it is somewhat common to mix the two and write 'transition' instead of 'condition', but that is imprecise, and therefore should be avoided when explaining things to people that do not yet know them (e.g. on LifeWiki).
If you just look through the forum post here, then there are indeed many occurrences both for 'condition' and for 'transition' used in a similar way.
However, there are further caveats.

Since both usages are common, the natural question is: which of two is easier to comprehend for a newcomer/LifeWiki reader?
The word 'transition' naturally reads as an event that happens. Birth, survival, etc. are events. It is easy to understand how these are transitions.
The word 'condition' naturally reads as a constraint or requirement that needs to be satisfied. A condition is not "something that happens".

Hence on LifeWiki and in other texts aimed towards newcomers and simply curious readers, it makes sense to word things clearer, by maintaining the distinction between conditions and transitions.

Further, many forum occurrences for 'transition' happen in the names of very few threads (e.g. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=3557), and are automatically copied "by default" from the first post of that thread (i.e. those are not written by the author of the respective post). There are much fewer occurences of 'transition' if you count each repeating thread name only once.

Just because people use 'transition' informally to mean 'condition' (and many of those occurrences happen automatically in few thread names) does not mean that that usage should be mindlessly applied on LifeWiki. LifeWiki is aimed at a different audience. Informal jargon can be documented on LifeWiki (because it is common), but actual LifeWiki usage (discussions of other topics) should not mindlessly follow it at the expense of clarity.

The quotes I posted by themselves count as expressions of choice of multiple people, who actually wanted to discuss some CA-related stuff, and who picked the word 'condition' as a natural/intuitive choice in the context.
