No. There's no point since LifeViewer maximum pattern width is much smaller.

AUTOFIT while playback isn't happening still doesn't react as expected if we remove living cells by drawing over them with dead cells.

I think this is good since you can ignore the errors if you like and just Identify the pattern. Uncleared errors will reappear next time you open and close the Settings menu.

Is it intended that "COLOR history" and "COLOR 2" in [R]History change the color for DEADRAMP, not DEAD?

Since we now have dedicated error messages for ALIVE, DYINGRAMP, etc. when their colors are changed in rulespaces that don't support them, can PCA-exclusive states also have dedicated error messages when a script attempts to change them in a non-PCA rulespace?

There's a bit of an odd it here: depending on whether you use "alive" or "ALIVE", it gives different error messages. It also implies that one of them is only valid for [R]History.

I think that both "alive" and "ALIVE" should work for [R]Standard as they currently do and the error message should be changed to reflect that this is the case. There's no need to limit one capitalisation variant to a given rulespace.

Also, there's inconsistent handling of invalid elements: in some cases, we get an extra error regarding the color we try to se an unsupported element to, saying that the color is itself an invalid command. This does not happen consistently. Should this extra error be displayed, or not?

I should also point out that "COLOR BOUNDED" still appears to be displayed in Help > Scripts > Colours even for unbounded rules despite it not being supported in those contexts.

This is intended. Bounded Grids are a valid option for each rule. In the same way it shows that you can set the Label colour even though there may be none defined in the loaded pattern.

No. These are cell colours. Customizing them should create a Theme. The grid boundary and bounded grid marker are not.

There's a couple of minor remaining cases with certain elements not being explicitly rejected:

For the "none" rule, "dead" correctly changes nothing since the none rule doesn't have any concept of death or birth. However, "alive" changes state 1, which is undesirable, since "aliveness" isn't a concept either. "ALIVE" and "DEAD" in all capitals are correctly rejected. Both "alive" and "dead" should be rejected and give error messages accordingly.

The latest build of LifeViewer (1015) adds an experimental faster algo for RuleLoader @TREE and @TABLE rules:
  • currently enabled with [[ FASTLOOKUP ]] script command
  • added Settings->Advanced->Fast Lookup (hotkey F7) to toggle Fast Lookup for supported RuleLoader rules
  • supports Moore neighbourhood rules with 2 to 8 states
  • supports von Neumann neighbourhood rules with 2 to 32 states
  • the algo is the same speed for @TABLE and @TREE versions of the same rule
  • note: it can take several seconds to initialize for 5 to 8 state Moore @TABLE rules

Please let me know if you find any issues. Once it looks stable I'll enable it by default.

Will the new algorithm be on by default for 5-state to 8-state Moore @TABLEs once it gets out of the development stage? If so, I'd recommend having the viewer appear immediately and implement a special loading message for the cases where it takes a while to load up.

Also, will this algorithm come to hexagonal tables or one-dimensional tables?

The new algorithm for rule tables is evidently a massive improvement, especially for @TABLE rules. Again, [R]History is surprisingly slow compared to [R]Super. Is this a result of state 6 processing?

Is there any difference between:
- running the pattern in B3/S23, 23/3/2 or via MAP string
- running the pattern with a LTL string versus a HROT string
- running the pattern using a rule table with symmetry setting "permute", a rule table with symmetry setting "rotate4reflect" with all INT transitions specified, or a rule table with symmetry setting "none" and all transitions specified?

In order to isolate the iterator performance I ran your tests above using Settings->Playback->Go To Gen (hotkey Shift N) and then entered 100000b in the Enter Generation dialog. The b means run in benchmark mode so the window isn't updated during the 100,000 generations. This isolates the iterator since no rendering is done.

  • [R]Standard and [R]History are the same speed. [R]History would be a little slower with mark states and/or state 6.
  • @TREE Fast and @TABLE Fast are the same speed. This is always true since it's the same algo under the covers.
  • [R]Super is 3.8x slower than [R]Standard or [R]History.
    • It's faster than @TABLE or @TREE (including @TABLE or @TREE versions of itself).
    • It has too many states to be supported by @TABLE Fast or @TREE Fast.
  • In general don't use @TREE or @TABLE for 2-state rules.

Additionally @TREE Fast Lookup and @TABLE Fast Lookup are identical.

Some results with the Go To Gen approach on the old fat Windows 10 PC using Brave, target of 100000b. This was all done in the same session without refreshing, and so does not account for any memory issues that may carry into other viewers. Is there any way to view the elapsed time that isn't in pop up text that disappears after a while, in case I end up missing it? A Help section, if there isn't one already, that holds this info much like how Identify does its elapsed time would be handy, especially for the algorithms that take longer.

Original algorithm: 3.4s
General algorithm: 21.9s
Old @TABLE: 60.2s
Old @TREE: 15.9s
New @TABLE/TREE: 7.8s
[R]History: 3.2s
[R]Super: 17.8s (an "unresponsive page" warning message showed up in the process)
General R1 custom @: 78.5s (same message appeared, it showed up early and lasted for much longer)
General R1 custom W: 32.7s (same message again)

My testing with 2-state ruletables is simply for consistency's sake with normal Life so that performance on the same pattern under different algorithms can be compared - if we can improve how a Life ruletable performs, it'll probably affect higher state counts as well (provided that no specific optimisations are implemented specifically for 2-state rule tables that don't benefit rules with more states). Likewise, if we can improve how the general-range algorithm runs range-1 patterns, it'd probably have a benefit for higher ranges as well if we don't make optimizations specific to range-1.

For things in the "Clipboard" menu, can a second text box be added to the viewer.html page which serves as a textual output? For example, 2-state rule tables which are converted to MAP strings, ans well as any selections made which are then converted to custom neighbourhoods, would end up in that text box in addition to the clipboard. This would be very useful for devices on which the clipboard interactivity of LifeViewer does not work (e.g. iOS). The inability to create custom neighbourhoods without either calculating them manually or switching to a different device just to push the same button has been a considerable hindrance to my exploration of higher-range rules, so having this sort of functionality would be a major asset.

How does LifeViewer determine where to place GRIDMAJOR lines on the grid? For the default setting of 10 (as well as multiples of it such as 20), they appear to intersect at the top left corner of the cell at (0,0), which to my understanding is the same as Golly. Other settings, however, cause them to shift a bit. They don't seem to be defined by the corner at (0,0), nor any corners of the unbounded grid. There appear to be some preserved alignments since a diagonal line drawn from the top left corner to the bottom right corner of the GRIDMAJOR square the block is in will always intersect the exact center of the block, but the movement doesn't seem to follow any consistent pattern. It might vary with the size of the pattern in the input RLE, its "expected" versus "actual" bounding box, and so on.

I'm not sure if a script command that can be defined to set the "position" of the major grid lines, where said position refers to where one intersection would be placed, would be feasible or useful to implement, especially if their default positions aren't seemingly consistent either.

I've been wondering for a while if it'd be useful for script error messages to contain a link to an associated Help section. For example, in the above cases for unsupported state numbers or element names, it'd take the user to Help > Scripts > Colours to list all of the actually valid color customizable elements.

Consistent behaviour between the edge of the grid and the edges of bounded grids when editing patterns would be good, but I'm not sure what the intended behaviours are for non-bounded grids.

Also, for patterns like this, could the "boundary" cells be added to the Identify period map somehow? They have a direct influence on the behaviour of the pattern just like the edges of bounded grids do, so including some of them at the edge of the map like how they appear for bounded grids would communicate valuable information about the pattern and its behaviour, as well as get rid of the issue where the bounding box "looks too big" and has a gap of two cells on the edge as opposed to one.

For patterns like the following, only the very topmost and leftmost rows would use the boundary color:

Also, how exactly does pattern killing at the border happen anyway? I know that DELETERANGE is used for checking cells next to cells that themselves get too close for deleting patterns, but I don't know how exactly a pattern is determined to be "too close to the edge" in the first place. This is something I've been curious about for a while, especially given how it seems to vary across different rulespaces.

If I invert it first to respect emulation, the block dies out, which is also not expected behaviour.

A suggestion: could the "copy as MAP" feature also be enabled for any range-1 2-state rule (and possibly Generations rules as well), as to make getting the string for any desired rule an easy process?
