Here's another two-mover (M as an abbreviation, anyone?) collision, but this time it makes a rotationally symmetric object:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
o2bo$4bo$o3bo$b4o$7b4o$7bo3bo$7bo$8bo2bo! [[ THEME Inverse ]]
I think we should call it the rotastable.

I tried to draw a mover by hand and made it too long... but it's still stable somehow!! It also goes the same speed.

Here's the thing. An even longer mover is still stable, so I tried to see if it was extensible forever, but it dies off either way. So there are a total of 3 mover types.

I think it's about time to discover the glider…
It seems like a bird can delete squares in one parity, but not the other:

Code: Select all

WHAT?! I have discovered a repeater with a period of not 2, not 3, but...8!
I put two 3x3 blocks together and I found this!

Code: Select all

It can even "kill" an ant! Can it kill a mover?

Code: Select all

I think I found something interesting.
When two movers go along intersecting paths, they usually stop and transmute into something simple.

Code: Select all

x = 99, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
13bo30bo7bo34bo9bo$2bo8b2o29bobo7bobo30bobo8bo$obo9b2o29b2o7b2o32b2o8b
3o$b2o!
If three movers meet each other, they can undergo wonderful transmutations.

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 15, rule = B3/S23
2bo$obo9bobo$b2o9b2o$13bo9$12b2o$12bobo$12bo!
I wonder what transmutations are possible if we allow some huge amount of movers to stop, let's say, fifteen movers?

Sure, I thought of that before too. If we only had some mechanism that could make infinite ants periodically... we could do superb things I think. Though who knows if we will ever have that.

I experimented with a few 4x4 7-cell shapes.

This one turns into 4 puffs:

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
obo$bobo$bobo$2bo!
There is this one that looks like a 4:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
o$obo$3o$2bo!
It moved forwards, then diagonally and spat out an ant!
(Then it spat out a square, split itself vertically, and produced another ant, square, and b2o$obo$2o!)

I also noticed that this one that looks like a fishing hook can absorb ants, movers, and birds, but not cardinals:

Code: Select all

x = 35, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
2o$bo$bobo18bo8b2o$2b2o8bo2bo4bo3bo4bo4bo$5b2o4bo7bo8bo$5bobo3bo3bo3bo
4bo3bo5bo$5bo5b4o4b5o4b6o!
EDIT: This one turned into a square and an ant.

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
bo$bo$ob2o$o2bo!

I didn't find an ant maker, but I found this:

Code: Select all

x = 27, y = 59, rule = B3/S23
5bo$6b2o$5b2o5$11bobo$12b2o$12bo2$20bo$18bobo$19b2o4$24bo$23bobo$23bo
bo$24bo3$23b3o$22bo3bo$23b3o16$15b3o$17bo$16bo5$8b2o$7bobo$9bo6$3o$2b
o$bo!
It doesn't produce ants, but it does produce puffs that must be destroyed by ants to keep it "alive".

I noticed that when a square is next to a 1-cell edge, sometimes the square lives:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 17, rule = B3/S23
13bo$5b2o7bo2b2o$ob2ob2o5bo2bob2o$b2o11bo$13bo8$bo$obo2b2o6b2o2b2o$3bo
b2o5bo2bob2o$12bobo$13bo!
Sometimes it works even if the edge is not 1-cell:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
12b2o$bo12bo$2bo2b2o7b2ob2o$o2bob2o7b2ob2o$3bo10bo$2bo9b2o$2bo!
So, I have been trying putting a few squares around the 7-cell pattern that looks like a 4 to see if it yields something interesting:
(This turns the 4 into four repeaters)

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
o$obo$3o5b2o$2bo5b2o!
(This turns the 4 into an ant)

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 14, rule = B3/S23
5b2o$5b2o6$9b2o$9b2o2$o$obo$3o$2bo!
(This turns the 4 into another 4, flipped 180 degrees, plus an ant)

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
6b2o5b2o$6b2o5b2o2$9b2o$9b2o5$o$obo$3o$2bo!
Wait... what if took two copies of that 3-square thing? Is this...

Code: Select all

x = 33, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
24b2o5b2o$24b2o5b2o2$27b2o$27b2o4$4b2o$4b2o12bo$18bobo$2o5b2o9b3o$2o5b

Wow! Looking at another of my reactions, this almost rotates a 4 by 90 degrees:

Is there any way to fix this?

Maybe we should call these "transformers"

Edit: look at rutabaga's repeater in 9 and 24 steps. This would be a repeater every 30 steps, but some extra squares appeared:
