My apologies -- I know it's slightly rude to move your posts out of the Oscillator Discussion Thread into the Sandbox.

However, you've started to break a few forum rules, so these posts were really starting to be a distraction on the thread where you put them.

1) Avoid double-posting
2) Try really hard not to post patterns without some kind of text description of them, at least a few words
3) If something will "make some of us puke", maybe it would be better not to post it, just out of common courtesy...! (This is both the "be considerate" rule and the "this is an academic forum, not a chat or microblogging site" rule.)

In general, the patterns you posted seem to be well-known low-period oscillators, or variants of them. It's best to keep the Oscillator Discussion Thread limited to new stuff only. Otherwise the new discoveries very quickly get buried in repetitive clutter, and nobody can find anything (especially if the clutter isn't labeled at all).

Of the 231 oscillators I've discovered, these numbers are ordered from "multiples of N most represented" to least. For example, I've found 7 that are a multiple of 40, which is slightly above 1 in 40. Being past "1" on the list means I've found fewer than random chance.

Caveats:

1. Only numbers from 1 to 100 are represented in the list above.
2. The period LCM(72,76)=1368 is not represented in the list above, and the p20/24 depending on timing was treated as a p20.

Notes:

• Closer to when I started, multiples of 7 were more overrepresented than multiples of 8. This has significantly changed despite no new sparkers that would cause that.

• While I've found important multiples of 19 (first p38, p57 and p114 guns, p76 sparker and SKOP), 19 is below average. It's just that the ones that I have found are important.

• I have not found a single oscillator with a period that is multiple of 17.

Please do not post replies that just say that something posted is already known. In my opinion, these do not add any on-topic/useful knowledge to the thread, and may even discourage constructive participation in that thread due to fear of accidentally posting something "obviously already known". Also, what seems "obvious" to one may be far from obvious to another, and sometimes the obvious may be totally wrong.

This adds useful knowledge to the topic because it might mislead new users (who doesn’t know catagolue exists or can’t navigate the site) to think that they made the discovery.

Then (probably) you could give URL links to webpages that support your claim that the patterns under discussion are already known, and that might actually be useful knowledge. On the other hand, if the reader does not yet know about Catagolue and has issues navigating the website, then I cannot see how would an one-line reply like "all these are obviously known and are in catagolue" be useful to that reader. It seems that they will now need to somehow understand what is "catagolue" (since by assumption they do not know that yet), which will require them to navigate the website (which, again by assumption, they are not sufficiently comfortable with). If you know that something is already known then maybe you could provide the necessary references as well.

Because people like to discover things? Personally I believe that rediscoveries are not bad, and certainly a rediscoverer of something should not be punished for accidentally doing what has been done before, especially when someone does not say "I was the first to find this" but rather merely "I found this".

Agree with the first part. (Also sometimes adding too much links is annoying, but not this case)
I also believe that rediscovery isn’t bad, and without knowing that it’s a rediscovery while saying that one discovered this is also not bad, but circling the patterns they found is a never done before(kinda) thing to a pattern collection, at least for me. That’s more than just saying, I was the first to find this, and why would you need such a large box(with a lot of empty space, [s]did you discover empty cells …?)[/s] like people either acknowledge the fact that you found this, sometimes naming them after you like cordership, but I don’t think they just give the names themselves. Most people has to agree with this, and you don’t usually name a pattern when you just found it(except systematic names) I would rather hear people saying, oh

the first thing is you don’t usually just throw things into the pattern collection, you just post the new discoveries,
And as I said circling out one’s discoveries is a bit odd, and using a lifehistory rule just for circling. (Except the glider tag along and eater part which I don’t understand why it is there)
