Sorry, I have been inactive for a month. Just dumping some of my useless creations here.

After noticing how a table becomes a 1x6 line and a glider can cleanly delete the block on a block on table, I made a last step for synth of worker bees. (Definitely known, I just made it for fun).

Code: Select all

x = 96, y = 17, rule = Life

2o$bobo4b2o82bobo$bo92bo$2o92b2o$11b3o$11bo$12bo!
And then I made some progress on the synthesis (for fun):

Code: Select all

x = 52, y = 41, rule = Life

A almost-complete (useless) snake synthesis. (It's an edgeshoot though)

While playing with the pi, I made an explosion. And then there was a barge, long barge, and long boat during the explosion. (Why so many tub things)

Code: Select all

x = 79, y = 23, rule = Life

2o$5bobo$5bo$4b2o!
And then after noticing a post about how a HWSS + pond almost turns into another HWSS (sorry I forgot the link), I made a 5g turn of a HWSS. (I guess this has a 0.01% chance of being useful, at least it wouldn't improve existing HWSS reflectors as it has to use a heisenburp and then circuitry to sythesise or place the SLs. But it could make HWSS-edgeshooting/injecting reflector though.)

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 41, rule = Life

9$3b3o$2bo2bo$5bo$bo3bo$bo3bo$5bo$2bobo!
Edit: I tried to inject it into a HWSS stream but its clearance was very bad.
Edit 2: Inaccessible conduit turns 2 beehive with tails into claw with tails.

The reason to use F116 is, well, I cannot find a better conduit to fix the color issue.

EDIT two days later: totally unrelated, this is what you get when trying to use the new p30 gun mechanism on both ends of a queen bee.

Huh, yeah, it seems like there ought to be something better, but there's a horrible hole in the H-to-H collection where there ought to be at least one small fast color-changing F conduit that lets the output Herschel's first natural glider escape.

Just for anyone else that looks at this: it's not enough to make the connection, you also have to get the p2 timing correct for the cleanup glider:

Code: Select all

#C no good because cleanup glider parity is wrong
x = 145, y = 95, rule = B3/S23

I noticed the LWSS out of the blue reaction, when doubled and put with an eater, produces a glider which can be turned into an LWSS. So I created this (1380/5=) p276 LWSS gun:

The starting pattern is extremely unnatural, and unlikely to occur randomly, and would also be very difficult to synthesize. It also takes a long time to settle, and leaves a large amount of debris, that would need to be cleaned up.

It might be better to look at generation 1485, which has two colliding B heptominoes - which turn into two more B heptominoes plus some junk. The junk should be fairly easy to synthesize, and it turns into a block and an LWSS.

44P38, the first p38 oscillator, was constructed from known components. So was 66P62 (Merzenich's p31 phase-shifting fumarole).

Putting old components together in new ways is the essence of invention. Except for occasional influxes of new components (e.g. introduction of corn, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, etc. after the discovery of the new world, or tea, rice, and noodles from China), all cuisine works this way. Lord of the Rings is the most fundamental new fantasy work of the 20th century, yet most of it is totally based on many previous mythological works. What is original is HOW old components are blended together to make something completely new.

Most astounding Life inventions (e.g. constructors, computers, patterns whose population is a complex function of time, etc.) are made with fundamental building blocks that have been known for almost half a century (e.g. gliders, glider guns, puffers, eaters, etc.), put together in new and inventive ways.
