Well, if you're going from an N-by-N pattern to (N+1) by (N-1), it's just one cell -- that's been known to happen.

Rectangle to longer-skinnier-rectangle is often still in the single digits. Your improvement isn't quite three digits, but it's close.

I feel that it's still suboptimal. I'm sure that if we look hard enough, we'll find the perfect G->H for this situation to reduce this even more-I suspect that it might connect directly to the H' bottleneck, or maybe not-there might not be much space for the block-suppressing eater. But it probably wouldn't need a BFx59H or a dependent conduit, or suppression of the B-heptomino's block-maybe it also happens to delete the block on its own! Ah, wishful thinking, but P144 is a very nice period, with oscillators that factor into it all over the board-there seems to be at least one decently small oscillator that looks like it would catalyze reactions (except P48): Achim's P144, Blocker roseluck, Jason's P36, Dueling Banjos, Rich's P16, Rob's P16, 44P12.3, Crown, 104P9, 50P9, snacker, 230P8, 209P8, Kok's Galaxy, Figure 8, Blocker, Scorbie's P6, P6 pipsquirter, the middleweight and heavyweight emulators, Caterer, clock, and blinker all come to mind. Surely it isn't that outrageous to hope that some of these could combine and make some tiny G->H? Oh, and Hebdarole is pretty small for a P7 sparker, so we have that too.

Are there any non-trivial seven-cell clock predecessors?
Also, what is the lowest population predecessor of this active region?

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
2b2o$bobo$o3bo$bobo$2bo!
Anything that converges by generation 21 is okay, but I want it to make the S-sequence in a separate way from the E-heptomino.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

This requires a single stream of gliders. It also would shoot down the Achim's P144...

According to my untrained eyes, this form is still not optimal. Observe how it's not a pure gun, since the P72 isn't being blocked from being brought in closer by the adjacent Achim's P144, only the P8 bouncer. My intuition says that optimal guns are also pure since this means that EVERYTHING would be packed as tightly as possible. Having to insert a bouncer is awkward anyways... Good work though!
EDIT: Difficult.

Yeah, I've been crashing gliders into Achim's P144s, and trying to add catalysts, hoping for a good Herschel output.

Ok, I'm having trouble compiling (again). I followed this WikiHow article (the part about MinGW) and on the penultimate step I get this error:

Code: Select all

C:\Search programs>gcc c -o ofind.exe ofind.c
gcc: error: c: No such file or directory
but ofind.c is in C:\Search programs. I looked up both "gcc no such file or directory" and "gcc no such file or directory but file exists", but to no avail.
Edit:Should I move this to the scripts forum?

Do you mean you mean C: or C, the programming language? I was just following the tutorial.
Edit: Must be the former.

The one after gcc:
gcc c -o ofind.exe ofind.c

It's doing nothing and gcc interpreted it as a file name.

Thanks. Now I got this:

Code: Select all

ofind.c: In function 'initHash':
ofind.c:148:19: warning: implicit declaration of function 'random' [-Wimplicit-function-declaration]
   hashValTab[i] = random();

C:\Users\SONY\AppData\Local\Temp\ccCVQ6lL.o:ofind.c:(.text+0x10a): undefined reference to `random'
collect2.exe: error: ld returned 1 exit status
It must be some sort of programming error.
wildmyron wrote:To compile ofind with cl.exe just change the two function calls of "random" to "rand".
Edit: I just turned the randoms in initHash to rand and it worked. Thanks again!

Send in another glider from the SW. Any other likely solution looks like it will end up being worse than that. (I checked dependent conduits, but they all fail to work in two or three independent ways.)

I found a way to suppress the B-sequence's block with a domino spark.

Code: Select all

x = 53, y = 33, rule = B3/S23

5bo$15b3o3bo2b2o$22b2o!
It creates another block, but it's at the edge and therefore should be easier to delete.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

1. The thing about that is that a glider from the Kazyanic filter would bonk the eater :(
2. Is there a sparker that can provide that spark? I'm not in a position where I can easily check myself.
EDIT: Solved via unix.

Could a pattern that factorizes arbitrary integers and displays their output be constructed?

It could probably be a similar design to the pi calculator, but it would have to be able to solve polynomials if it were using a fast algorithm like the elliptic curve method, quadratic sieve, or general number field sieve.

Obviously it would be useless in factorizing large integers because of a combination of the long time taken to factorize sufficiently large integers and the fact that it's in CGOL.
B2n3-jn/S1c23-y is an interesting rule. It has a replicator, a fake glider, an OMOS and SMOS, a wide variety of oscillators, and some signals. Also this rule is omniperiodic.

Why could the Oscillator's Period and the Factory's period be different?
Is it allowed for a Factory to eventually crash?
Also, What is a Glider ?

Since Life has been proven to be computationally universal, it is possible to construct a Life pattern that can emulate a Turing machine (which has actually been done), and it's possible to program a Turing machine to compute any computible function (e.g. factorization of any finite integer). This doesn't mean that doing it by emulating a Turing machine would be particularly efficient; only that it's theoretically possible.

(In a similar fashion, it's possible to construct any glider-constructible pattern from 17 gliders via constructor technology, but that doesn't mean that it's easy to describe the particular coordinates of those gliders. The entire program is deduced from the position of one remote glider - and its position is necessarily very far away, even for the simplest of constructions.)
