How to discover new patterns
How to discover new patterns
I'm surprised at the wonderful patterns in the game of life.
How were those patterns discovered?
Are they all random discoveries? (I think not.)
What about those big and periodic patterns like OTCA metapixel?
How do we discover new patterns now?
Please let me know if you know anything about these questions.
Looking forward to your reply.
Wish you have a nice day!
PS:I'm not good at English so if some words were used inaccurately,
please don't put it on mind and I'm glad to correct.

Re: How to discover new patterns
Welcome to the forums!
Many natural patterns were, and could be once again, discovered by starting random configurations (called soups) and checking the result. But then we can do artificial constructions using our wisdom, of which OTCA metapixel is a good example.
Please read the Tutorials to get yourself familiar with cellular automata
By the way, how did you learn about Game of Life and find this forum?

Definitely not all patterns are discovered randomly. Many are deliberately found or built using search programs like WinLifeSearch (WLS), Rust life search (rlifesrc) or ikpx. You aren't limited to searching for B3/S23 either. Here, have two p3s and a bunch of spaceships that rlifesrc found (all useless):
Code: Select all
x = 637, y = 427, rule = B3/S23

Tools should not be the limit.

Re: How to discover new patterns
you just test things together and see how it goes
like see: I «discovered» the large beehive by messing around (but probably that people already did that.
Then for more things to discover, it's mostly to make certain guns by glider synthesis (sometimes also accompaniable by other spaceships (mostly LWSS MWSS and HWSS)), since there is still some things to recreate from this, or make the synthesises into canons, which I'm not that good to do xD.
Of course, there is high chances we didn't discover all still lifes, all types of still lifes, same for the osciltators and ships or ##stretchers and ##eaters ([##] is refering to a certain pattern), and again canons.
But we just didn't go experiment high enough to be sure there is no more to know about, we'll keep pushing boundaries, see if we can somehow make a c/2073 oscillator or something like make an ant-stretcher+ant-eater gun (which I believe could already have been made but not sure about it.)
But it's mostly a mather of testing out again and again, finding connection to make to do certain new patterns, maybe put some already existing patterns to use to make more, like creating tag-alongs and such.

Re: How to discover new patterns
I'm exceedingly delighted to receive your timely and helpful replies.
With all of you, the forums is so active.
There are so many replies that I can't reply one by one.
The first time I learned about Game of Life was when I browsed in bilibili.
I saw a passage titled"Conway and His Game of Life"(not sure),
which is the best introduction I have ever read. But now I can't find it anyway.
Then I downloaded "Super Life" in Appstore and knew ConwayLife.com through it.
I suppose it's a little difficulty to find ConwayLife.com for most forgein people.
I'm from China too.
Amazing!

Many natural patterns were, and could be once again, discovered by starting random configurations (called soups) and checking the result. But then we can do artificial constructions using our wisdom, of which OTCA metapixel is a good example.
Please read the Tutorials to get yourself familiar with cellular automata![]()
By the way, how did you learn about Game of Life and find this forum?

Re: How to discover new patterns
That's not how patterns were found. (Unless that pattern was Kazyan's almost c/61)
Why are there suddenly four Chinese in this thread?YYDH wrote: February 11th, 2021, 3:52 am I'm surprised at the wonderful patterns in the game of life.
How were those patterns discovered?
Are they all random discoveries? (I think not.)
What about those big and periodic patterns like OTCA metapixel?
How do we discover new patterns now?
Please let me know if you know anything about these questions.
Looking forward to your reply.
Wish you have a nice day!

I want to attack this question from a different angle. I created a cellular automaton in Jan 2020 that is strikingly similar to Conway's Game of Life, and named it LeapLife. LeapLife is well-developed (in my opinion) and like 20% of all discoveries are discovered by myself. Methods in LeapLife cannot be directly applied to regular Life because they're done already or completely covered by another search already. But they can give inspiration or reflect how historical patterns in regular Life were found. (@goldenratio, I intentionally avoided "bluffing" it.)
0. I spend much time to learn Game of Life history.
1. The Gosper glider gun, along with the queen bee shuttle, was discovered by close observation of the R-pentomino, which evolves into a queen bee (without the blocks) and I believe Gosper tried all queen bee collision. There are 3 glider-producing collisions. One of them produces a glider that crashes into one of the queen bees, the other one produces a glider that didn't escape in time, so the only collision left is the gun now known as Gosper Glider Gun. I tried to apply this method, we've found a number of shuttles (Bookend shuttle, traffic light shuttle, Pi shuttle) but no luck making a gun. In contrast, most guns in OCA were found by rubbing two high period sparky oscillators, similar to Period-33 glider gun. p22 and p24 glider guns were created, though no one managed to create a p19 glider gun with the p19 sparker.
2. Search program matters (and is the only practical way of, say, finding a ship with a new velocity), but they're the most useful when they first come out, because (usually )every search can only be ran once and we quickly run out of searches that can be completed in an reasonable time. (There are certain people in the Game of Life history who were crazy enough to run a search for a year, but as a middle school student I won't attempt that.) Small patterns are not necessarily known unless exhausive search is done - one such search, only partially completed (like 2/256), quickly found a new p12 spaceship. (Historically, the fireship was also discovered using an exhausive search.)
3. Soup based syntheses are low hanging fruits. They're really easy, you just take a soup, observe how did the object form, if it formed from the reaction of some small regions (LeapLife soup tends to become one large blob unlike Game of Life though) synthesise the small regions seperately. (If the spacing is tight, a one-glider-seed can be used to insert that region, see my octapole synthesis.) Unnatural syntheses is, on the other hoof, very hard that when someone completes one of them, we congratulate them many times. (That does not include still life syntheses
, they uses a method more similar to organic chemistry synthesis.) Typically, one builds a final step first as a proof of concept. Typically, the final step consists of a base still life (that should be similar to the object to be synthesised so it could be converted to it easily) and some activation gliders. Then people synthesise the base still life. I don't know how people actually attack this, because I haven't done one in LeapLife.
4. WLS/JLS (RIP wwei23) is very useful for most purposes, like aforementioned spaceship searching (it allows customizable searches like with a T shape, thus providing more variety than other programs like qfind) and unnatural synthesise (it can find reactions) and customized sparkers.
What pattern do you want to know about exactly?

0 History? Just browse through the wiki and forums, I guess. Ask questions if you're confused on anything, especially all this weird jargon we use.
1 Search programs search for patterns/rules/etc. There are a lot of them, just ask if you notice one you don't understand.
2 WLS is WinLifeSearch, a search program for Windows. JLS is JavaLifeSearch, a rewriting of WLS in Java for compatibility. wwei23 was a user here (they're gone now) that was known for using JLS for like literally everything. They're still alive, so RIP isn't exactly the best term to use, but whatever.
3 It was engineered (constructed from components), which more often than not means that someone decided to do something with far smaller things.

I need help.Anybody want to join? I think we can discuss it openly.
0. Read the wiki and its references, and make guesses, like how did they think of it. If in doubt, go to Thread for basic questions! A number of active users, such as mniemiec, were there when Conway's Game of Life was originally created, so they know about the early surveys more than anyone else do.
1. Search programs are programs used to find interesting patterns. Apgsearch runs many 16x16 random patterns (for some rules, it can reach like 10000 soups in a second!) and record the final ash into a census. Programs of the LS family uses cell-by-cell backtracking. Others are more complicated. If you want to know how a specific program works, just ask.
2. WLS = WinLifeSearch, JLS=JavaLifeSearch. Wwei23 is a user who made many significant discoveries with JLS, and recently, his parents forced him to delete his account, so I say Rest In Peace. He came here years before me, and he's very helpful.
3. OTCA Metapixel is assembled with logic gates.
4. The private message inbox have a limit of 100 messages, and new messages cannot be viewed unless previous messages were deleted. I received probably more than 200 messages over the years, and have to reply to and delete them when I have new messages. (I have two of them now including yours.)
However, this process is slow. I don't have much time to go on the forums now, and I like to spend several days writing a log n, I mean long reply, partially because I used to be spammy, and of all non-moderator users I have the most posts (supposedly).

Hi Dylan Chen! Firstly, this is more or less selfish but can you please stop spam searching SkiLife and/or search LeapLife? It's rather humiliating to see someone with money surpass the collabrative effort. The leaderboard, I believe, is supposed to reflect what rules are people interested in searching. It's just as humiliating to see someone with money surpass other people in other competition.Dylan Chen wrote: March 7th, 2021, 2:57 amHi,Hunting!Hunting wrote: February 13th, 2021, 8:13 pm most guns in OCA were found by rubbing two high period sparky oscillators

On SkiLife glider gun, I'm not sure why did you consider p7 "high-period". It is the lowest period that Sokwe considers interesting.
I've never constructed a glider gun via sparkers myself, but from what I've seen in LeapLife, the first step is find "spark candidates" i. e. sparks that can be perturbed into a glider. Your p36 seems to produce only 1 or 2 bit sparks, and two or even three of these sparks doesn't seem to produce anything. You'll have to find a more powerful sparker, like a banana sparker, V sparker or something.
On the other hand, if your p36 or other stuff can reflect glider 90 degree, you can make a gun with a "cyclotron" method. I don't know about SkiLife in particular, but do you have an over-unity reaction (or constructible rake)?

Hi Dylan Chen! Firstly, this is more or less selfish but can you please stop spam searching SkiLife and/or search LeapLife? It's rather humiliating to see someone with money surpass the collabrative effort.
1. cloud computing is more carbon-friendly than home based PC. the cost of instances is minor than my laptop electric bill. and I'm sure their power supply is greener(cheaper) than home electricity.
2. I don't know whether you check Discord frequently, there is a search-request-bot which can handle the request of minor hauls as everyone calling it. most bot hauls, excpet b3-k/s23-i, weren't requested by me. it could be yujh for the b38/s23, or iNoMed for Life's high symmetry.
the reason of set the haul size small is let the bot to serve more people. for the heavy search computing request, especially in symmetric Life, the haul size is 7*10^7 with designated prime-num suffix. check D8_1
3. it's a sad fact, but calcyman is using rented GPUs and I believe rliston is doing so as well. apgoucher12/17/2020 discord The machine I'm renting from LeaderGPU is 2291 EUR (2800 USD) per month, and it has eight 2080Ti GPUs (and apgsearch ends up being limited by only having 16 physical CPU cores (32 with hyperthreading), so the GPUs are only about 80% utilised).
the search speed of G1 is equal to ten 2080ti GPU, you cannot expect everyone purchasing a 1500$-worth-GPU before doing G1 search.
the fourth point is kind related to 'believes'
the eagering of 'see more discovery before my last day' make me tolerable with everything, as long as actual progress are made.
I understand you that you'd like actual effort on CA rather than paying with computing resources style. could you understand me (a common adult far from the intelligent as you are).
is is possible to collaborate? help your creativity and genius with some computing resources?

Re: How to discover new patterns
Why LeapLife? Is not the point of the leaderboard to search rules you want? I also, wouldn't call it competition. Isn't the whole point of finding OCA or objects in Life to be academic? Not competitive?Hunting wrote: March 8th, 2021, 9:20 am Hi Dylan Chen! Firstly, this is more or less selfish but can you please stop spam searching SkiLife and/or search LeapLife? It's just as humiliating to see someone with money surpass other people in other competition.

On top of that, why is it humiliating? I don't quite understand... I might even go as far as saying that you are selfish for wanting your rule to be on top. Also, I don't quite understand how money even fits into this.Moosey wrote: March 9th, 2021, 2:24 pm^HelicopterCat3 wrote: March 9th, 2021, 12:00 pmWhy LeapLife? IMO, the leaderboard is supposed to reflect what most people are interested in searching, not which rule have the strongest computers. I don't have any opinions on using cloud computing.Dylan Chen wrote: March 8th, 2021, 8:34 pmtks for the elaborate gun-making guide, but I'd like to clarify the 'money' relating concerns first.Hunting wrote: March 8th, 2021, 9:20 am

I am surely aware of the bot, but isn't Discord banned in China mainland? And Discord is pretty much "random posts but worse" as of now, and the sole purpose of it is producing chitchat and/or unproductive posts. I believe very much that the Discord Server of CGoL should be shut down.

(1) where else do you expect the community to chitchatHunting wrote: March 10th, 2021, 1:33 am And [the] Discord is pretty much "random posts but worse" as of now, and the sole purpose of it is producing chitchat and/or unproductive posts. (2) the CA channels actually have a lot of productive content
