I can't see anything unusual in your setup. I've made another change that *might* make a difference. Please hard refresh and try again.

Same behavior -- still can't get to State 25 on the state-picker bar, except by using the color picker on a pattern that already has State 25:

Code: Select all

x = 1, y = 1, rule = LifeSuper
pA!
#C [[ LABELSIZE 30 FIXED LABEL 0 0 10 "It's a dot!" ]]
If I do that, the display bumps over to show states 19-25, but the display to the left of that still says "18-24" and can't be adjusted rightward. This is still only in the pop-up -- everything works perfectly in the embedded viewer. Hang on, I'll try an embedded viewer with the same dimensions as the popup:

Code: Select all

x = 1, y = 1, rule = LifeSuper
pA!
#C [[ WIDTH 576 HEIGHT 582 ]]
-- Nope, that still lets me scroll over to State 25 just fine.

LifeViewer still says it's Build 573, though, even after a hard refresh. I figure that's just you experimenting with "build 573".

Do you see the same issue where I can click through the edit bar and add ON cells, unless I click exactly on the slider bar to click and drag a different set of states?

Yep, I change the build number before an actual release.

No. I can only draw if I click outside the slider box.

Which browser are you using?

Ah, I meant to check this yesterday --

Google Chrome is up to date
Version 87.0.4280.88 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Turns out the issue doesn't happen in Internet Explorer, or in Firefox (!).

If you click in the tiny gap just to the left of the slider box, does that draw an ON cell? For whatever reason, I seem to hit that spot constantly when I'm just tryin' to slide right.

Same version here. Interesting the issue is Chrome only for you.

Yes it does and that's expected. If you click outside a UI control you're clicking on the background so it will draw (if you're in Draw mode).

It would be a good bit more user-friendly for me if the gap to the left of the slider bar were considered to be part of the slider bar. I definitely don't ever want to draw ON cells in that tiny little gap, but it's been happening a lot by accident.

Noted.

That behaviour is true for all gaps. For example all of the buttons to the left of the slider have small gaps between them. However I guess it's sliders where you're most likely to hit the draw-on-background-accidentally issue.

Is there a mode that tells LIfeViewer to display the mouse location in cell coordinates?

That would be mighty handy for collecting POI locations. Right now I'm moving the desired point to the center of the screen and hitting the 'i' key, but I have a sneaking suspicion that that's not the right way to do this...

I presume you mean screen position. The indicator at the bottom left is the cell coordinates and value (e.g. 3,4=1).

You should be using Shift+i to display the Info Bar. Perhaps that's what you meant.

I'll have a look at being able to toggle which coordinate system is displayed at the bottom left or perhaps make the InfoBar X and Y sensitive to the mouse position.

Actually I think a variant of that is the right way to collect POI positions. The intention was that you'd frame the pattern on the display as you'd want it for the POI and then collect the coordinates. Showing the InfoBar is one way to do it. Another way is to use hotkey K which will copy the current camera position to the clipboard in the following format:

Code: Select all

#C [[ X 8 Y -1 ZOOM 14 ANGLE 0 ]]
To convert that to a POI just add the [[ POI ]] command at the beginning:

Code: Select all

#C [[ POI X 8 Y -1 ZOOM 14 ANGLE 0 ]]

I think there's a cosmetic bug in Copy View. I just tried Shift+K for a time later than T=0, and got

Code: Select all

#C [[ T2094 X 517 Y -660 ZOOM 28.00 ANGLE 0 ]]
#C [[ THEME Generations HISTORYSTATES 0 WIDTH 1496 HEIGHT 640 ]]
(no space after the "T").

Re: Life tag testing

Post by dvgrn »

I finished up labeling for the Exploratorium today, and ran into a case where the current system seems a bit awkward.

I had some moving labels that were set to display at ZOOM 6. But I wanted them to display at farther-out zoom levels than the default allowed.

So I wanted to say LABEL {x} {y} 6 1, so that the font would be defined by the first zoom level mentioned, and I wouldn't have to change LABELSIZE (since I already had it where I wanted it).

However, that just made the labels disappear. So I had to change to LABEL {x} {y} 1 6 -- and then fiddle with the LABELSIZE to get the size back to where I wanted it.

Ideally maybe there should be two optional numeric values after the default ZOOM for a label. If there's just one, it's MAXZOOM -- but if there are two, they're MINZOOM and MAXZOOM.

Build 584 is now available on the lazyslug server

Enhancements in this build:
  • [[ LABEL ]] and [[ ARROW ]] now support three ways of defining the zoom and zoom range:
    1. [[ LABEL X Y Z "text" ]] : zoom is Z, min zoom is Z/4 and max zoom is Z*4
    2. [[ LABEL X Y Z MAXZ "text" ]] : zoom is Z, min zoom is also Z, and max zoom is MAXZ
    3. [[ LABEL X Y Z MINZ MAXZ "text" ]] : zoom is Z, min zoom is MINZ, and max zoom is MAXZ

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 3, rule = Life
o$obo$oo!
[[
LABEL 0 -4 32 "normal"
LABEL 0 -1 20 40 "from 20 to 40"
LABEL 0 3 32 10 40 "from 10 to 40"
