Re: Let's create a good language!
I'm saying that in the current language, "to sleep" and "to at-sleep" only differ by a promotion affix and have the same meaning except that "to at-sleep" uses its direct object as a location. This video and the next have some information about how to evolve a language. I'd like to make this language more complete before evolving it though.

Well of course we shouldn't evolve it yet. How should we make relative clauses?fluffykitty wrote: November 25th, 2020, 4:59 am I'm saying that in the current language, "to sleep" and "to at-sleep" only differ by a promotion affix and have the same meaning except that "to at-sleep" uses its direct object as a location. Re: Let's create a good language!
Latin uses an inflecting relative pronoun (like English "to/of/etc which", but with cases). Maybe we could do that?
Re: Let's create a good language!
what is case mark?

Re: Let's create a good language!
How does that work? Also, should there be a difference between <that>, <who>, <where>, and <when> in relative clauses? If yes, should we reuse the question words like in English and French or find another way?fluffykitty wrote: November 25th, 2020, 5:25 am Latin uses an inflecting relative pronoun (like English "to/of/etc which", but with cases). Re: Let's create a good language!
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/qui#Pronoun_8, so "homō cui dedī" <the person I gave to> (probably). I think "where" and "when" should use the locative case of "that", with "who" staying separate, and that we should use different words for questions and relative pronouns.Schiaparelliorbust wrote: November 25th, 2020, 5:37 amHow does that work? <saitai> "to be", example inflected form <saihanein> "is (inanimate)"

Will <that> be a word or a suffix? I prefer word. I don't think the question who and relative clause who should be the same word.fluffykitty wrote: November 25th, 2020, 5:46 am https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/qui#Pronoun_8, so "homō cui dedī" <the person I gave to> (probably). Can you break <saihanein> apart? I don't know of any word that means inanimate. What happened to the t a the end of <saitai>?fluffykitty wrote: November 25th, 2020, 6:01 am <saitai> "to be", example inflected form <saihanein> "is (inanimate)"

Not every word, but probably quite a few (third person verbs, question words, and relative pronouns so far)

Yes, there should be a /t/ there. <sait-han-ein> "be-PRES-3INAN"Schiaparelliorbust wrote: November 25th, 2020, 6:07 amCan you break <saihanein> apart? I don't know of any word that means inanimate. Re: Let's create a good language!
I can't put these in a table unfortunately because the syntax to make tables and suffixes both use dashes.fluffykitty wrote: November 25th, 2020, 6:50 amand passive <-(s)o->Code: Select all

Edit: There is a part on how to put negative numbers, so the problem should probably be solved.

Okay. We should make more words, like <nwail> "cat" and <pli> "person". Also, do adjectives precede or follow nouns?

Re: Let's create a good language!
We could have it change meaning like in French <homme pauvre> <poor man (monetarily)> while <pauvre homme> <poor man (normal meaning)>. Usually when it comes after it has a more literal meaning.fluffykitty wrote: November 26th, 2020, 3:55 am Okay. We should make more words, like <nwail> "cat" and <pli> "person". We could also have it in the middle.

Re: Let's create a good language!
Do you have any proposals for expanding the lexicon? Some obvious choices are animals and body parts (from which we can derive sense verbs using the instrumental+verb endings).

Re: Let's create a good language!
I was thinking body parts too. Not all body parts have an obvious/primary function like fingers, arms, mouth etc, so we shouldn't have every single body part be a "tool" for a verb. Calling a mouth "eater" would shadow that it is also used for speaking or other body parts also help with eating, so it might be kind of ambiguous.fluffykitty wrote: November 26th, 2020, 4:48 am Do you have any proposals for expanding the lexicon?
