Quarks and Stuff

Post by HelicopterCat3 »

Inspired by rules like Gluons or Wilfred, the cells in this rule behave slightly like the subatomic particles, Quarks. Each kind of quarks can interact with the other, in a somewhat cyclical fashion. Here are the rules:

Up Quarks have the rule B3/S1356 and are the primary state. When they die of overpopulation, they turn into Charm Quarks.

Down Quarks are like Up Quarks, except they don't turn into Charm Quarks and can survive if next to Up Quarks.

Charm Quarks have the rule B4/S23456. They can be reverted back into Up Quarks if touched by Down Quarks. They are sort of reactive with Up Quarks. If Charm Quarks die of overpopulation, they turn into Strang Quarks

Strange Quarks have the rule B2/S6. They can turn all quarks into Strange Quarks if touched by them. Charm Quarks are more resistant to this however because 6 Strange Quarks have to touch them before they turn.

If one of each quark is interacting with the other 3, they all survive to make an "atom"

I've already discovered some basic oscillators, still lives and and spaceships. I wanna see how many patterns we can discover in total

Code: Select all

@RULE QuarksAndStuff

# State 0: Dead
# State 1: B3/S1356 | Up Quarks, reactive, when they die (7/8) they turn into Charm Quarks
# State 2: B3/S1356 | Down Quarks, semi-reactive, can survive if they interact with two Up Quarks (and the rest being Down)
# State 3: B4/S23567| Charm Quarks, if touched by Down Quarks they turn back into Up Quarks, can slightly react with Up Quarks. Turn into Strange Quarks when they die (8)
# State 4: B2/S6 | Strange Quarks, whatever they touch turns into more Strange Quarks (but only if 1-5 Strange Quarks are touching Up and Down Quarks, Charm Quarks need exactly 6 to be turned)
# One state can only give birth to the same state, their survival and death is what causes reaction and change.

B2/S6 makes this rule uninterestingly explosive. I think it should be changed.

Well, the strange quarks are purposely explosive, because realistically in particle theory matter made of strange quarks is called strange matter and is able to turn other particles into strange matter as well. These particles of strange matter also move really fast through space. So it made sense to have them as a B2 rule. There should be spaceships made of the other kinds of quarks, because they have B3 rules

I think something like 3-4 life (B34/S34) would be more interesting yet still explosive, albeit not as much.

Yup. I do like it much better. I've changed it in the original post. I agree, Photons and B2 rule do get boring. They worked for the rule at first, but 3-4 life does seem like a better fit.

Single quark type patterns that emulate a single rule shouldn't be too interesting. Also, charm quarks can't escape their bounding box, so you might want to change that.

Well, the up quark one temporarily creates a charm quark, and there are more than likely ships that can exist with multiple quark types in them. Yes, the charm quarks do not move very much, and I realize this now (detecting a theme with how I share my rules with other people?) So I'm going to decrease the survival rate so that they form more complex patterns (they aren't really supposed to form ships, so still lives and oscillators). Down quarks can survive if around up quarks so there's perhaps some opportunity there. Charm quarks can turn into up quarks if touched by down quarks so, there could be moving shuttles of some kind. I just put these patterns here as sort-of an introduction.

Re: Quarks and Stuff

I've decided to make a different more optimized version of Quarks and Stuff, by just changing the rules of the strange and charm quarks. The original quarks and stuff can still be searched along side this "sequel". The only difference is:

Strange Quarks are in 3-4 Life and Charm Quarks Have the rule B4/S235.

Here is the new rule:

Code: Select all

@RULE QuarksAndStuff2

# State 0: Dead
# State 1: B3/S1356 | Up Quarks, reactive, when they die (7/8) they turn into Charm Quarks
# State 2: B3/S1356 | Down Quarks, semi-reactive, can survive if they interact with two Up Quarks (and the rest being Down)
# State 3: B4/S235 | Charm Quarks, if touched by Down Quarks they turn back into Up Quarks, can slightly react with Up Quarks. Turn into Strange Quarks when they die (6/7/8)
# State 4: B34/S34 | Strange Quarks, whatever they touch turns into more Strange Quarks (but only if 1-5 Strange Quarks are touching Up and Down Quarks, Charm Quarks need exactly 6 to be turned)
# One state can only give birth to the same state, their survival and death is what causes reaction and change.

Oh, I see. But why is strange quarks S6 essential anyway?

It is now supposed to be B34/S34, but in LV it doesn't seem to work like that. The rule works properly in Golly.

Well, I've just decided that there should be two versions of it with different kinds of strange quarks explosion, so there's a 1 and 2. Normal QuarksAndStuff has the B2/S6 strange quarks while the QuarksAndStuff2 has B34/S34 Quarks.
Something head told me this made sense, but we can focus on one more than the other if one yields more usefulness or discoveries.

I mean, why did you decide it should be B2/S6 and not B2/S at first place?

And how much are these based on Up Quarks in real life?

It could be more realistic if quarks didn't simply survive forever when together. Strange quarks, in real life, can make strange matter, which is hypothesised to be super stable, and may be able to convert normal matter into itself.

When an up quark touches another up quark and a down quark or a pair of down quarks, it could survive. Down quark is symmetrical.

Protons are made of two up quarks and one down quark, vice versa for neutrons. Maybe they could be stable like that. B34/S34 is also a realistic rule for strange quarks because on Wikipedia it says that "strangelets" might decay into regular matter if very small, but can convert regular matter into itself if larger. B34/S34 isn't immediately explosive, and AFAIK 6 cells is the minimum for an explosion.

This rule is loosely based on particle theory, so the Up and Down quarks are not that realistic, but I did use how 2 ups and a down form a stable neutron or proton and cause each other to survive mutually, so that's one similarity. Like Schiaparelliorbust said, strange quarks make strange matter which can convert normal matter into strange matter. But in real life, throw a couple of up quarks together and of course you get a spaceship that flies at half of light speed! (Only joking of course) I just thought it would be fun to make a CA based on real particle theory and see how it would work. Although I suppose It doesn't work too well since particles can't be born or die cause matter can't be created nor destroyed but it's still fun.

Edit: To answer your question about the strange quarks rule Hunting, I think I put the S6 there so that it could make an oscillator with charm quarks but now it don't quite remember.
