Re: Thread For Your Accidental Discoveries

I was messing around with using glider streams to cut through a field of junk, and discovered this:

x = 405, y = 398, rule = B3/S23

Re: Naming Conventions?

Life Hashing System:
-Each pattern has a binary number.
-Start at top left of bounding box. Go left to right, top to bottom (like reading).
-Example:0x0
00x
xxx is 010,001,111

-Patterns are oriented and filpped to have the lowest possible binary number.
-Oscilators and spaceships use phase ...

A Challenge: Steerable Spaceship

I will pay $50 to the first person who creates an internally steerable spaceship. It must meet these requirements:

-Contains one or more memory loops
-Uses the information in the loop(s) to turn the spaceship
-Does not require anything external to operate (I.e. no still lives, oscillators, gliders ...

Re: The Online Life-Like CA Soup Search

an 8-cell pattern with a glider and a blinker can last quite a while

Clearly the bounding box has to enter the equation along with cell count and lifespan (admittedly a tough if not impossible equation to come up with). I suppose there will always be trivial cases no matter what methuselah ...

Re: Golly scripts

I can't seem to get it to work for some reason.
PM 2Ring is using a very old version of Golly so some of his scripts don't work with newer versions (2.0 or later). Here is a fixed version:

In order to program the computer, you simply need to alter the sequence of eaters extending to the north-west.
Ok, I see.

Do you have a script to turn 1s and 0s into the eater sequence?

Re: Thread For Your Accidental Discoveries

I discovered that a p30 Gosper Glider Gun can be used to invert a glider coming from the front:
x = 36, y = 24, rule = B3/S23

This version comments out the setcursor() call, which fails on recent versions of Golly. It will also allow you to recover the uncompressed version of the compressed output script: simply run the output script at the command line instead of in Golly & the script will be ...

Re: indestructible pattern

A Universal Constructor surrounded by a wall would need some way to detect damage and translate that into a repair.

Indeed. That's difficult, but theoretically possible.

It wouldn't be able to recover as fast as the incoming gliders could damage.

Again, I mean a device that can absorb all ...

Good point. Dave Greene and I are making a pattern collection of stable technology, which includes Herschel conduits.

There are 22 elementary Herschel conduits, five of which use boojum reflectors.

I strung together a chain of overwriters to create a repairable line of blocks. One of the gliders from each reaction triggers the next, with an extra block added to eat the other glider:

I just noticed that with this particle chaos field, one of Macbi's circles shows up in the middle at gen 382

After leaving it for a while, lots of the circles start to appear. I think for patterns like this, the whole inside of the octagon will always become filled with the circles and either ...

I don't know if anyone has mentioned adding HexLife (or whatever it ends up getting called). One of the difficulties with that one is that rotations are different.

Re: indestructible pattern

*snip*
There is no proof of a 100% eater, but I believe that a Universal Constructor surrounded by a wall could constitute such a pattern. However, Dave Greene seems to doubt this:

my instinct is that a stable pattern will never be 100% glider-proof -- there are too many possible lanes of attack ...

Herschel Tracks

I think the next thing I want to learn about is Herschel Tracks: How they work, how they're used, and what they can do.
