Re: GOL-based "Productivity Tools"
Here's the CGoL screensaver I use right now. There may be a way to turn this into a video.
I feel like having a screensaver constantly updating in the background would be distracting. The way I think this could best be dealt with is by slowly fading in the next generation over the course of ...

Definitely not me, then! But given the Frenchs' history and the generations of sublime mathematicians they brought forth (they and the Russians, gotta hand it to them...), I can only imagine that those must be very good videos.hotdogPi wrote: September 7th, 2026, 10:03 am I don't remember whose videos they were. While I haven't watched them myself, I know we've gotten a few influxes of new members from YouTube videos over the years. Keep doing it!

If you could give us a couple of examples across a variety of patterns (sparsely/densely populated, containing a lot of repeat patterns, random soups) and compare your optimization with existing RLE, that would surely help to sell this!

Update on the current state of the affairs:
The currently longest-lived known pattern on the torus is "it_took_soooooooooooo_long_help" (32x32), submitted by Phnx and which runs for 9,786 unique generations (no configuration previously held). This is remarkable for two reasons:

Re: Thread for your unsure discoveries
I discovered this pattern in February 2026 but didn't realize what I had in hand (I was just puzzled that on the 16x16 torus, this pattern gives humongous non-repeating generational counts, far higher than previous patterns evolved from soups):
x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23:T16,16

Re: who did always remove thread to sandbox?
From your previous posts, it seems like you are under the impression that these patterns evolving through an arbitrary ruleset and outputting something that looks vaguely similar to a landform somehow reveals the origin of some symbols. I would like to inform you that you are objectively wrong ...

I hear you, gentlepeople, and I think you are right. I'll place an API (and a background checker that bypasses the runtime output to the browser so that you don't have to wait) on my feature wishlist.

Re: CHALLENGE: Find the longest-lived GOL pattern w/ the fewest / most alive cells as its initial state
I've been running a miner half a day for 100 million plus patterns on the 20x20 torus but could not find any new Agar (or the known Agar p314, for that matter). The currently longest-lived pattern there runs for 2,813 unique generations (owned by Vort, no surprise there...).
