Re: amling questionable searches/ideas firehose

I've finally completed my 1 TB rotor tree pipeline sweep of 3c/6 frontends, unfortunately with no results. This was all done with a pretty severe effort, e.g. 1 TB of memory, separating WAO indicies, various framings of subproblems where possible, etc. The only further tricks I can think of that I ...

Re: amling search program principles discussion / brain dump

I did a little more work on symmetric handling in mgp-tool today. It's slow going because it's a lot of icky geometry and grid management and the edge cases are just vile.

On branch (unpublished), --pic-mode will add question marks for asymmetric recentering:

Re: amling search program principles discussion / brain dump

I sketched hiking the edge configuration way, way up and having it annotate a few select outputs with reflected copies (where appropriate). This works even for wacky geometries, e.g.:

Re: amling search program principles discussion / brain dump

I think the filter and final partials stuff is looking pretty good. As I said above, simple use should be more or less unaffected but weird uses of filters or DL stuff will probably need to know some details.

The final partials stuff makes "--pre-partials none" slightly less weird. I still struggle ...

Re: amling questionable searches/ideas firehose

Easy one: the Crochet article on LifeWiki says that no 2c/6 spaceships have been found which support the Crochet. Surely you can find one in a few minutes, since all you need are some correctly positioned backsparks? Or has this already been done and the article is simply out of date?

Re: amling search program principles discussion / brain dump

I've sketched a major overhaul of how filters work. For typical/simple uses it would be undetectable, but for finicky use of multiple filters or DL steps there may be changes coming. Lengthy details below...

For old, old, incredibly old reasons, filters were first written as "steps", i.e. entirely ...

Re: amling questionable searches/ideas firehose

I tried for fronts and backs for parallel, unstaggered ants at 2c/7, with no results. It's difficult to sort the partials due to how badly many failed to engage the prompt. Ordered by apparent length and dropping those that subjectively spent it mostly not engaging the prompt, the best few f2b are ...

Re: amling search program principles discussion / brain dump

People often ask about LLSSS features with "can't you just do XXX with fully-reified partial boards?". The problem is that it doesn't work that way. LLSSS only has "vertical" (i.e. having fixed U value or extending parallel to the W axis, whichever way you want to think of it) strips of pattern in ...

Re: amling questionable searches/ideas firehose

I tried to find a 4c/8 continuation of the known 2c/4 x 2c/1 edge, thinking that maybe I could force it to turn by using U=2X-T. This does work to bound the extension of the 2c/1 edge, but ultimately I did not end up with any good results.

2c/4 searches all generally died the instant they reach the ...

It makes more sense to ask/answer in reverse, i.e. "how is recentering WAO different from recentering?", which you more or less already asked here .

It was sort of a wild long shot, but I tried looking for 2c/10d back rake, specifically a WAO search from a glider stream, 2c10d-up, hoping for a PD division to c/5d. I ran it pretty aggressively, splitting up all WAO indices strictly and running separate searches for several different amounts of 2 ...

I tried running c6k-2 searches off of Sir Sprayer's giant spark, hoping for a tagalong. These were a combination of WAO at a given depth to force a change from Sir Sprayer and also this forbid_grid to discourage being disconnected from the spark:
