Re: New Music inspired by the Game of Life
The source patterns, up to eight per piece, are listed on two pages at the score's end
by name/discoverer/year and grouped by height (piece number), as explained in the
NOTES. There are ca 90 all-told.

New Music inspired by the Game of Life
Dear Game-of-Life Gurus,
I have just completed "Patterns from the Game of Life, Part I". Subtitled "Eighth-Notes for Toy Piano",
it consists of 25 short pieces, each in length 11-29 seconds, in range from 1 pitch to 2 octaves. The
music is based on some ninety graphs from the LifeWiki collection ...

Re: 5-5-5-5-5-5-5
Thanks dvgrn! I'm writing a bunch of piano pieces based on this and a dozen-or-so other ConwayLIfe.com images. Now double-checking pattern-authors' names for its program notes. I'll yell here when the thing's done -- some months yet to go.

I'm referring to the pattern that Martin Gardner discusses in "The Colossal Book of Mathematics"
(pages 416-419). Could someone tell me who first used this pattern (as a Game-of-Life initial
state), and when, and what he-or-she named it? Thanks. - PA

Re: Are Game-of-Life images under copyright?
Thank you, vyznev, for your thought and time. I just want to note: that Dean Hickerson and Paul Callahan both indicated non-objection to my copyrighting the piece; that I've published it via IMSLP's Edition Ottiavano Petrucci

Re: "Thin Rake", the Piano Piece
Well, thanks! -- except, I've got to say, any taste in it was intrinsic to the pattern (i.e., "wasn't me").
The gliders you've noted are what prompted my comment (in 'NOTES') re the Ninety-Deg Transform
in post-WWII serial theory. If you do find another pianist brave/crazy enough to try playing this ...

Re: Are Game-of-Life images under copyright?
for dvgrn: Thank you for identifying the Hensel collection. I'll add this to my attribution line.
for Scorbie: I've described in the piece's intro ('NOTES') page. Simply, it's built on a mapping of the individual squares -- horizontally to time, vertically to pitch, with some license re the latter ...

Are Game-of-Life images under copyright?
I have written some music - a short piano piece - based on Dean Hickerson's and Paul Callahan's "Thin Rake"
image, and am now searching to identify permissions needed to proceed with copyright (of a derivative work!)
and publication (which would be by IMSLP's "Edition Ottaviano Pettruci"). So far ...
