Not really, but you can get away with (say) (2,1)c/6 in 3x6 matrices, because horizontally it's always aligned at ⅓ of the width. Just because the flat bits grow doesn't mean it doesn't approximate a circle. If the flat bits grow in length as o(sqrt(n)), then in the limit they are gone.

I think this calls for an overhaul. My approach would be a list of sporadic velocities (by small spaceships and fixed-speed tracks), and then a couple lines for each VSS, detailing possible velocities.

Actually those warnings will give bad printouts. They may also cause stack problems. It is very important to change those instances of %d to %ld. (On OSX, sizeof(int)==4, sizeof(long)==8).
