I found an orthogonal period 3 pushalong. Too bad no period 3 spaceship has a leading or sufficiently isolated side spark.

Neat! I've found a multitude of 8 and 9 cell predecessors to this particular pattern but not this 7 cell one.A for awesome wrote:7-cell, 3x5 methuselah lasts 1675 gens.Code: Select all

Re: Methuselah Definition
@c0p0b0 I'm not sure how subtracting the travel time of a triggering spaceship is "complex" in the same manner as the mathematical sieves previously presented, perhaps we are working with different definitions of complex?

@NotAvailableCooper: The clause you mentioned was suggested before by ssaamm.
Well, a Methuselah is defined by, essentially, the size of the original pattern versus the size of the reaction it creates, right?
You are thinking in terms of bounding boxes, which he considered to be outdated, while ...

Phi spark moves a block over two spaces as it dissipates. Kinda fun to watch.

Re: Thread For Your Accidental Discoveries
So I was messing about with smoke recently when I found this reaction, which when supplied with the sparks shown will reappear after 11 generations flipped over. Anyone know of a p11/p22 diagonal sparker?

Hi! I'm a guy who's been playing around with GoL for 5 years and is particularly fascinated with methuselahs. I'm no expert, but I know enough to have made a video series on the basics on YouTube.

Re: Methuselah Definition
I think a methuselah is any pattern that lasts more than 1000 gens before becoming periodic, and has a population that does not keep increasing forever. Therefore a pattern that creates a switch engine does not count.

I myself am making a tutorial series on GoL and would like to invite anyone who wants to participate in a discussion of a GoL topic, a showcase of personal discoveries or similar to contact me via my YouTube channel. The link is the first episode.
